This Refugee Week, we're celebrating the theme of Courage. ❤️

For LGBTQ+ people seeking asylum, courage can mean navigating an unfamiliar system, building a new life, sharing your story, and continuing to be yourself despite uncertainty and challenges.

That's why we're proud to run our LGBTQ+ Asylum Support Group alongside Trade Sexual Health – creating a relaxed, welcoming, and inclusive space where people can find community, access support with their asylum claim, take part in group activities, and connect with services that can help them thrive.🌈

Courage isn't always loud. Sometimes it's attending a new group for the first time, asking for support, making a new friend, or simply showing up as your authentic self.

Together, we celebrate the courage of LGBTQ+ refugees and people seeking sanctuary, and the power of community, connection, and belonging.

🚨Did you know that the Centre started as an LGBT helpline in 1976, run ENTIRELY by volunteers?🚨

We’re proud to be taking part in Volunteers’ Week 2026 - celebrating 50 years of volunteers powering Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre! 🌈

Today we're shining a spotlight on Jade, who first joined the Centre as a member of our Quest Dungeons and Dragons group...

"I found the LGBTQ+ Centre had "Quest" through searching online. I dragged my partner along with me for moral support, and found my people.

It filled a void in me to meet so many people who were just as weird and wonderful as myself, after a lifetime of trying too hard to fit into spaces that didn't want me.

This was the place I learned that I wasn't wrong in anyway for going against the grain of what a heteronormative society wants. I gradually changed my pronouns, that now suit me much better (They/Them), met all sorts of people who really opened my eyes to the q***r world, one that I had little experience in.

Over time, I realised that I had developed a strong passion for the work that the LGBTQ+ centre does; witnessing members form friendships, feel included and valued, fostered the drive to volunteer myself and give new members the same kind of welcome I had received.

Volunteering is the highlight of my week, I love what I do and the positive impact it has on people. I hope to keep working with the LGBTQ+ Centre for many years to come."

Without our volunteers, like Jade, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. Thank you to each and every one of you! ⭐
