Our Dementia Community Champions project team were hard at work last week talking to people at Leicester Community Links CIC. We were raising awareness of dementia, its causes, symptoms and diagnosis, brain health and the steps we can all take to reduce our risk of getting dementia.

At our recent 15th anniversary event, we were joined by keynote speaker, Danny Sriskandarajah.

Danny is one of the UK’s leading voices in civil society. He helped the audience to consider how civil society can respond to changing communities and increasingly complex challenges, whilst ensuring that local people have a genuine role in shaping the decisions that affect them.

This month, Reaching People celebrated 15 years of collaboration across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland with a landmark anniversary event bringing together members, founders, funders, civic leaders and partners to reflect on the partnership’s journey and look towards the next 15 years.

Held at The Grove Community Hub in Braunstone, Leicester, ‘The Power of Us: Transforming our Community’ event marked a significant milestone for the partnership of voluntary and community organisations, which has grown into one of the region’s strongest and most collaborative VCSE networks since its formation in 2011.

In his keynote address, we heard from Danny Sriskandarajah, one of the UK’s leading voices in civil society, who helped the audience to consider how civil society can respond to changing communities and increasingly complex challenges, while ensuring local people have a genuine role in shaping the decisions that affect them.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Mick McGrath from Locality to the panel The Power of Us: Transforming our Community on 10 September, a special event marking 15 years of Reaching People and the incredible work of our partnership across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Locality is the national membership network, supporting local community organisations.

Mick has been a Development Officer covering the Midlands region for Locality since October 2013 and is based in Nottingham. His role includes supporting community enterprises, research, Community Asset Transfer, relationship management and working collaboratively with organisations across the region.

Mick works extensively with social enterprises, providing one-to-one support, using diagnostic tools and helping organisations prepare to successfully access funding opportunities. His recent work in Leicester includes supporting Highfields Community Centre with a Community Ownership Fund grant, as well as acting as a critical friend to Urban Equine Academy to support its funding applications and business planning.

We’re delighted to have Mick as part of the conversation.
