Vehicle Crime Prevention Advice During Hot Weather

Enjoying the sunshine? Don't give thieves an opportunity. ☀️🚗

As temperatures rise, people often leave windows open, valuables on display, or vehicles unattended for longer periods, creating opportunities for thieves. Please take a few minutes to read the below tips and advice to secure you vehicle.

🚗 Lock it every time

Always lock your vehicle, even if you're only away for a few minutes.Ensure all windows, sunroofs and convertible roofs are fully secured.

🎒 Remove valuables

Never leave bags, phones, wallets, laptops, sunglasses, sat navs or charging cables in the vehicle, or if unavoidable, make sure they are not visible.Take items with you or lock them in an unseen, secure location when you arrive at your destination.

🔑 Keep keys secure

Never leave keys in the ignition while cooling down, or popping into a shop. Store vehicle keys away from doors and windows at home.

🪟 Close windows

Hot weather often leads to drivers leaving windows slightly open. Even a small gap can allow offenders access.Ensure windows and sunroofs are fully closed when parked.

🏖️ Be extra vigilant at beauty spots

Car parks at parks, reservoirs, tourist attractions and beauty spots are popular targets during warm weather.

📱 Take personal data with you

Remove documents containing your address or personal information.Avoid leaving work equipment, uniforms, or identity passes in vehicles.

🚘 Park smart

Use well-lit, busy car parks.
Park where there is CCTV coverage when possible. At home, park in a garage or on a driveway if available.

⚠️ Watch for relay theft

If your vehicle has keyless entry, consider using a signal-blocking pouch for the keys.
Check whether your vehicle manufacturer offers software updates or additional security features.
A bag, phone or even a charging cable left on display can be enough to attract a thief.

Although this message has been shared several times over the last few weeks, it is important to keep sending out reminders as we are seeing on a regular basis across the UK, tragic incidents related to the risks taken during the recent hot weather. Thank you to all that read and share the below alert, the importance of this cannot be understated.

As temperatures rise and weather alerts are put in place across the country, it’s important for everyone in our communities to take simple steps to stay safe during hot weather.

While it’s the perfect time for BBQs, seaside trips, park walks, and making memories with family and friends, we’d like to share some important advice to help keep everyone safe.

🌊 Open Water Safety

Swimming in rivers, canals, lakes, or reservoirs might look refreshing — but it can be extremely dangerous.

Please take a moment to learn how to stay safe, including:

🏡 Burglary Prevention in Warm Weather

With warmer days, our routines change — open windows, time spent outdoors, and items left in gardens can create opportunities for thieves.

Simple steps to protect your property:

🔐 Always lock doors and windows when not in use
🪟 Keep open windows secure and out of easy reach
🚲 Don’t leave valuables (bikes, tools, keys) on display
💡 Fit good locks and consider motion lighting
👀 Report suspicious activity via 101 or Crimestoppers (0800 555 111)
🚨 In an emergency, always call 999

🐶 Dogs & Hot Cars

Even on mild days, cars can become dangerously hot — putting pets at serious risk.

Please remember:

🚫 Never leave dogs in parked vehicles

A few of us on the YARN community Facebook group have been chatting about reporting any sightings of the lads on bikes / quads with masks / balaclavas on as soon as anyone sees them in the area. On most occasions it’s safe to say they are probably up to no good.

🚓 Yeadon Tarn – 28/04/26

Officers seized a Surron at Yeadon Tarn following ongoing concerns about public safety. This was the second time the same bike has been seized, and it will now be sent for destruction in line with procedures.

Our priority is keeping parks and shared public spaces safe for pedestrians, families, and other legitimate users. Taking action against repeat offenders helps reduce the risk of injury and ensures everyone can enjoy these areas safely.
