As a person with Asperger syndrome, I struggle to fit in with “normal” society, however I feel as this came to a head on a night out recently. I was out with friends, enjoying the night, but they don’t share the same disability as me, they were able to meet friends and have relations that I struggle to have with people. This I must stress isn’t their fault, they are enjoying there night, as they should be able too. For me with my condition, however, it made me feel even more like an outsider. I must stress, that the friends I was with did not exacerbate this, as they weren’t privy to this knowledge of how i was feeling. I was watching my friends enjoy the night, from a distance, while myself feeling more and more isolated, as I struggled to understand the surrounding I found myself in. I am a seasoned university sports player and have been in this situation many times, however this truly made me feel that I do not fit in and that I understand little about what other people find so naturally to do, I was under the influence of alcohol, but I normally don’t feel like this, meaning it is a dangerous combination, as I am well versed in normal interaction, however under the influence I felt like some of my true feelings were released, making me less engaged and more estranged from the people around me and Making me feel like a hindrance to my friends.

Anxiety is something that affects 1 in 10 of us in the UK. Some of these people have underlining disabilities. Here are some tips to help when it gets bad:
* Breathe - focus on your breathing
* Yoga
* Write down your thoughts
* Meditation
Always look after yourself and if you feel like it's getting bad go to the doctor's or come to the Students Union. Alcohol and drugs will make things worse in the long run.
