The condition of the road through Torcross is worsening. There was a meeting yesterday with our local mp, Caroline Voaden. This is a report of the meeting sent to me by an attendee (I was one of the many who couldn’t get in!):

Caroline Voaden has a meeting with the appropriate Minister next Wednesday to see if any money is available. Only hope for reconstruction is central government funding. There is a £1billion structure fund that has been set up to help replace bridges and tunnels but roads not mentioned. Caroline will argue that roads should be included.
Very complicated picture with so many interested parties - Dept. of Transport, Environment Agency, Natural England etc. All ducks have to be got in a row. Whatever happens it won't be quick.
Condition of road is worsening with every tide at the moment and the houses may be structurally unsound. South Hams Council organising structural survey. If road is re-built it will be a very major investment to try and ensure it's long term viability. The environment agency say the sea wall in front of the houses is doing it's job but there is some doubt about this - beach level down by 2 meters, houses and path shaking as though foundations undermined.
In the short/medium term Devon CC have money they can spend on local improvements to the back roads, improved bus services and much improved signing.
If reconstruction proves impossible plans to turn the area into a destination environmental and nature area are starting to be thought about - the object being to maintain and improve employment and business opportunities in the area.
Many harrowing stories from people who live on the seafront and cannot access their homes and are worried that they may loose everything.
Much talk about keeping everyone informed and consulting whenever options are considered. Petition to be set up petitioning government to help. Aim to get very wide coverage to include people from everywhere who have visited and love the are. 100,000 signatures and you get a debate in Parliament in front of the minister! There is no doubt that the local agencies - DCC, SHDC and our MP - are working extremely hard at the moment with the immediate priorities being keeping people and property safe and damage limitation.
Whatever happens we will be without the road for a considerable time.
