We are a friendly and enthusiastic group that meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 7:30pm at the Sacred Heart Hall, Henley. HOT WI is the Henley-on-Thames Women’s Institute, a modern WI for the 21st century. We are a fun and enthusiastic group, formed at the start of 2017, which spans the generations with members from all walks of life and background. We meet on the third Friday of the month in Sacred heart church hall, vicarage Rd , Henley at 19.30 and have a diverse meeting programme with the emphasis on gaining new skills, new friends and promoting good causes. Henley members are part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, a movement formed just over a century ago when women were playing an increasing role in society. The WI helped women to develop new skills and gave them opportunities to campaign for issues that mattered to them. Now, with wider aims and a flourishing membership, it the largest women’s organisation in the UK. There are many great reasons to join HoT WI. We are a supportive and friendly group of women of all ages, from 20s to 90s with a varied monthly meeting programme, a monthly email newsletter and active social media community. You will have the opportunity to meet people and to get involved with local events and good causes. As part of the National Federation of Women’s Institute you will also receive the monthly WI Life Magazine and the chance to get involved with national campaigns for social and environmental change. Come to a Meeting and find out more. You are warmly welcome to attend up to two meetings as a guest. Guests are asked to pay £5 at each meeting which is deductible from the full cost of your membership should you choose to join on the evening. Doors open at 19.15 for a 19.30 start. We begin with any official business, announcements and news - we try to keep this as brief as possible. Then we have our main meeting focus - a speaker or activity - followed tea, coffee or a glass of w**e and, often, cake and or biscuits. Then you will have a chance to a chance to chat with members and learn more about. Meetings typically end by about 22:00. We do hope that you will decide to join us. The current annual subscription is £43, with a pro-rata rate depending on when you join in the year.

We are sure your committee sit around a table each month and discuss a great many ideas on how they can improve your programme and make it more exciting than it is already! They will also ask you, the members, for ideas. A WI is so much more than its eleven meetings.

The Adviser team is running this workshop and would like members, committee members, those thinking of becoming committee members, to come along and meet others, share ideas and be inspired by each other.

There will be plenty of time for you to ‘network’ and some topics that will be covered are, Programme Planning, Marketing with your programme and on social media platforms, the Resolutions voting procedure, booking events online for you to help your members. This is a flexible programme so if you have any burning issues you would like covered, please let us know.

Coffee, tea and cake will be freely available but please bring a packed lunch.

Remember, you will be attending on behalf of your WI so you are able to claim the ticket price from them if you wish.

The Kenton shares its story with Henley WI.

The Kenton Theatre went behind the scenes with members of Henley WI last week, as Theatre Manager Lottie Pheasant and Chair of Trustees Dennis Oliver shared a special presentation exploring the theatre’s past, present and future.
Lottie and Dennis also spoke about the breadth of activity taking place at The Kenton today.

it was interesting to hear the history about the early days of the Kenton theatre through 220 years and its many incarnations over the years from the site of the original town workhouse in Henley until 1790 to a purpose built new theatre opening in 1805, the same week as Lord Nelson died at the battle of Trafalgar with all the takings from a performance gifted to the widows and orphans fund of those killed at the Battle of Trafalgar. The theatre closed in 1813 was then used as a Non -conformist chapel then became a National school until 1850.It was consecrated as a church again whilst St Mary’s had alterations then became a church hall and also a barrel store for Brakspears. Next opening as a theatre once again in 1870 for a short period.Through a number of other uses, including being closed for 21 years, Playhouses and name changes to its current position as fourth oldest working theatre in England. Lottie explained the essential roles of the volunteers from manning the box office to selling icecreams in the interval.

It’s so important to support our entertainment venues in our town and with such a wide variety of acts from top comics, musical tribute acts,magicians and our local theatrical groups amongst the professionals performing on our local stage.
The benefit of being a friend of the Kenton was also covered allowing for early booking for tickets and more.

Lottie and Dennis are keen to take the presentation to more clubs, societies and local groups.

It was great to see some new faces at our meeting and a couple of guests from Wallingford WI.
Our next meeting in August will be a social event a chance to catch up with our wi friends.
We also have 2 coffee mornings each month for a more casual get together.
Saturday 1st August we will be meeting in the morning in Mill meadows.. bring your own seat.
