NCI Prawle Point

NCI Prawle Point Prawle Point NCI keeps watch over coast and sea from Bolt Head to Start Point (Devon UK) all daylight hours.

The Prawle Point Watchstation stands 200 feet above sea level at the most southerly point in Devon. As with other NCI stations, it is manned by unpaid volunteers who maintain –

A watch for emergencies at sea

A contact point for emergencies on shore

Watches are maintained visually, with radio and with radar. The station is totally dependent on the generosity of individuals, companies, and other

organisations for funding. Can you help to keep us running either by contributing to the running costs or by becoming a watchkeeper?

It was lovely to meets Mags Southam and her husband up at the lookout this morning.
Mags father, Geoff Howell, who I remember, was a watch keeper at Prawle for many years, and Mags still visits the lookout whenever she is in Devon., and makes a donation each time.
She also follows our page.
Safe journey home Mags. Lovely to talk to you both.

Its been an eventful start to June, with two incidents in two days.
Our solo watchkeeper on Tuesday late am heard a MAYDAY. A yacht with three persons on board had a fouled genoa, and were unable to lower it. They had one crew member with severe seasickness.
Our weather station indicated a W F7 at the time.

We had the casualty vessel visual, and contacted Falmouth HMCG with accurate position and bearing from Prawle Point.
Our two pm watchkeepers were able to assist monitoring once they reached the lookout.

Salcombe AWLB was launched to assist. Once on scene, they put two crew members on board to drop the genoa.

Watchkeepers Fiona and Jude were closely observing a French solo sailing yacht at 19:15 last night as it headed straight towards the rocks just East of the lookout. Suspecting the sailor may have fallen asleep, they immediately contacted HMCG Falmouth on 999. Falmouth called the vessel twice, then suddenly it turned to Port, away from the cliff, thankfully avoiding what could potentially have been a very serious incident.

The vessel continued on it way, and is now off the SW of Cornwall with the rest of the French solo racing fleet, but this could have been a very different outcome had it not been for the vigilance and prompt action of Fiona and Jude. Very well done ladies

It is National Volunteers Week:

Where else would you find the most amazing views of South Devon, and spend four hours looking out to sea ?
As long as you can climb the footpath up to our lookout, and have a keen eye, and time to volunteer for a minimum of two or three watches a month, the this might be just what you are looking for.

No previous knowledge or experience required, as full training will be given both up at the lookout, and two or three classroom sessions. Our training sessions begin in the Autumn, most watchkeepers qualifying after around 10 watches with our trainers.

More information can be found on our website, https://www.nci-prawlepoint.org.uk/

We were delighted to be chosen to be the charity chosen by the Alvington Singers to benefit from the collection taken after their concert last Wednesday at Thurlestone Church. The audience were very generous and we had a good social time afterwards where we were able to explain how we work at Prawle Point.

On behalf of Prawle Point NCI can I thank you and the choir for a lovely evening on Wednesday and the opportunity to collect funds to help us maintain our service.

I very much enjoyed the concert and it was nice to have the opportunity to explain our work to so many people over the refreshments afterwards.

We were delighted with the collection where we raised £258-30..

What a lovely morning up at Prawle Point today. Met an Australian man on the way up. He is walking the whole SW Coastpath during his UK holiday, and is well on his way to Poole
A little later we had a visit from a Danish couple, who live in Belgium, but are also over here walking the Coastpath. They didn't know about NCI, and were blown away by the view from our lookout.
We are so lucky to keep watch over this lovely part of the SW coast
