It’s going to be a hot, hot day at the Royal Norfolk Show and the Night Shelter has been hard at work since early this morning! Here we are with our friends from St Martin’s Norwich and the Herring House Yarmouth, with a joint stall as this year’s President’s Charities raising awareness of homelessness in Norfolk. We’ve all sorts of information from all three charities, a “living library” of lived experience to talk with visitors about homelessness and what’s it’s really like, and of course our 2026 flower stall!

Today and tomorrow, stall 343 on the Second Drive. If you’re at the Norfolk Show this year do come and see us … we’re under the trees with the best shade on site!

Tomorrow! This week, Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th, the Night Shelter joins St Martin’s Housing (Norwich) and the Herring House Trust (Yarmouth) as the President’s Charities of the Year at the Royal Norfolk Show! We’ll be raising awareness of homelessness in Norfolk, sharing stories about our work, and we’ll also be running a flower stall of beautiful hand-tied bunches thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Forever Green Flowers, English Peonies, Smith and Munson and Collison cut flowers! Thank you so much to them all for their generosity … and to the Bishop of Norwich, this year’s President of the Show, for his nomination 🙂

Here’s a preview of some of what we’ll have available. Wednesday and Thursday, 8am til late, find us on the Second Drive (near the red car park), stall 343. We’re looking forward to working together and having some good conversations, and seeing friends old and new!

It’s Saturday afternoon, today’s fundraising walk for the Night Shelter is complete, and thanks to the generosity of our friends and supporters we’ve raised a wonderful total of £1,360 + Gift Aid so far! Thank you so much to you all for your gifts.

Our Director, Lucy, has shared a message for our friends:

“Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored today’s walk from Lynn to Walsingham. It’s lovely to have your support for our work and it’s also nice to have completed the 29 miles in less than half the expected time - it took 11 hours 35 minutes!
The “Walsingham Way” only opened a couple of weeks ago and it’s certainly a beautiful route, especially at midsummer with the Norfolk countryside at its very best.

Walking any distance with things to carry - even if it’s just a day’s water supply and the jumper you thought you needed at 3am - makes those things grow heavier. I found myself thinking today about the things some of our guests are carrying when they arrive with us - not just sleeping bags and the things they’ve needed for sleeping rough, but all their belongings, packed into whatever they have to carry them in, and carried all night and all day. It’s no wonder that guests who have come to us from sleeping rough often arrive exhausted.

The Night Shelter tries to be a place where these heavy burdens can be put down, not just the bags and rucksacks, but the fears people carry about having nowhere to go tonight, the anxiety about the future, the shame and embarrassment at being homeless. We try to show our guests that the Night Shelter is a place of safety, of hope, and a place where they will be valued regardless of what they have or haven’t done in the past and what has or hasn’t been done to them.

Walking to Walsingham today is a part of this hope - hope in our community, for your support, and hope in the work we do together, that we will continue to be of service to the people who need us most. Thank you again to everyone who has helped … and if you ever want to go to Walsingham, don’t forget there’s also a handy bus!”

It’s 9am, it’s midsummer’s eve, and today’s sponsored walk from Lynn to Walsingham in aid of the Night Shelter has already raised over £1,000! Here are some pictures just in from our intrepid walker this morning, it looks like an early start but half way there already …

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far! If you’d like to make a donation, there’s still time, and every penny supports the Night Shelter reopening this autumn:

This Saturday! The Night Shelter’s director will be attempting the newly reopened Walsingham Way from Lynn to Walsingham, 29 miles in 24 hours, launched just two weeks ago as part of a project to revive Norfolk’s medieval pilgrim routes.

Sponsorship and donations are welcome! Every penny will go towards the costs of reopening the Night Shelter this autumn to provide safe accommodation and ongoing support for people in West Norfolk who have nowhere to go home.

“Our guests often describe to us what it’s like being homeless, walking all day, walking at night because they don’t have anywhere safe to sleep. I’m walking to Walsingham this summer to help them, and I’ll be following in the steps of pilgrims who have been walking to Walsingham for nearly a thousand years to ask for help at this ancient holy place. Any support is much appreciated!”

It’s fundraising season at the Night Shelter, with an exciting programme of events planned for this summer and autumn … more details soon!

In the meantime, some of our staff team have been looking at fundraising ideas of their own, and here’s one to start us off … a sponsored walk on Midsummer Eve from Lynn to Walsingham in North Norfolk, 29 miles in 24 hours, along the newly reopened Walsingham Way due to be launched this Saturday!

Our director, Lucy, has this to say about the route:

“Our guests often describe to us what it’s like being homeless, walking all day, walking at night because they don’t have anywhere safe to sleep. I’m walking to Walsingham this summer to help them, to raise funds to reopen the Night Shelter in the autumn, and I’ll be following in the steps of pilgrims who have been walking to Walsingham for nearly a thousand years to ask for help at this ancient holy place. I’m looking forward to the 24 hour challenge, and any support is much appreciated!”

It’s a busy morning at King’s Lynn Town Hall today for the Volunteers’ Fair as part of … it’s the first year the Night Shelter has been part of this event and we’re very pleased to be here! We’ve been sharing information about our work and chatting with possible new volunteers, and as always it’s good to hear people’s stories about what has inspired them to consider volunteering, as well as sharing our own.

Here’s our volunteer Andy who cooked dinner for our guests last night, hard at work again this morning encouraging others and with a certificate from today’s organisers to thank him for everything he does!

The Night Shelter is hosting two information and training evenings this September in preparation for October opening, 24th and 29th September, 7pm at the Night Shelter on Blackfriars Road. We’ll be needing lots of help this autumn, preparing meals, chatting with our guests and of course making lots of cups of tea … and in the meantime, we’re very grateful to all our volunteers for their invaluable work!

It’s good to see the Night Shelter on the front page of Your Local Paper today to launch the beginning of our 2026-27 Appeal … with many thanks to the team as always for their support for our work!

Sadly the Night Shelter will be closing for three months this summer, to focus our resources on fundraising and planning for the autumn - as for many charities, the cost of living crisis and increasing competition for grant funding has meant a decrease in income this year and a need to adjust plans accordingly. It’s disappointing news - but we remain committed to year-round opening for the future as soon as we can. Our last night meanwhile will be 30th June.

In the meantime we have a lot to do - not only supporting our guests to find accommodation in the next few weeks, but also fundraising including at the Royal Norfolk Showground next month … and we hope to be back in October!

The Night Shelter receives no local or national Government funding. Around a third of our income each year comes from individual and community donations, and from fundraising events. It costs around £30k per month to keep us open to our guests, and around 85% of this is staff costs (the remainder is the rent of St John’s House, utility bills, and household repairs and essentials). Fundraising is a big job - but it’s also a big opportunity, because homelessness could affect any of us, and all of us can do something to help when we come together to succeed.

We’re very grateful to all our friends who have been in touch in the last few days with donations or messages of support, with offers to volunteer time in the autumn, and to our guests who remind us every day of the value of the work we do. If you’d like to support us, please feel free to be in touch - or to make a donation, here’s the link:

“The staff are so nice and helpful, rooms are clean, it’s better than a hotel” … some feedback kindly left by one of our guests recently, a lovely encouragement to our staff and volunteer teams!

Could you be part of making this possible? Next week, Thursday 7th May, 7pm at the Night Shelter, information and training evening for new volunteers: if you’d like to join our team this summer then this is the evening for you!

We’re looking especially for people who’d like to help in the mornings, once a week or whenever works for you, providing breakfast for our guests and being around for the start of the day: and/or in the evenings, cooking dinner (or just helping, you don’t need cooking skills), chatting and being a listening ear for our guests.

All welcome (18+) - no need to book, 7pm at King’s Lynn Night Shelter, St John’s House, Blackfriars Road, King’s Lynn PE30 1NT (the red brick house on the left after the station).

We hope to see you then!

Today the Night Shelter visited the Norfolk Showground for the AGM of the Royal Norfolk Show, whose new President the Bishop of Norwich has chosen us as one of their charities of the year alongside our friends from St Martin’s in Norwich and Yarmouth’s Herring House Trust.

The Show has a focus this year on supporting communities across Norfolk to thrive, and we’re delighted that this focus includes three Norfolk homelessness charities.

We’ll be back at the Showground for the Show itself on 24th and 25th June, to share news of the work we do, to raise the profile of homelessness in the county, and of course to fundraise too … and hopefully to have a chance to make lots of new friends!
