Szandra never suspected that the symptoms she was experiencing could be heart failure.

After months of worsening symptoms, including breathlessness and swelling, she was eventually admitted to hospital and diagnosed with heart failure.

Her experience of getting a diagnosis is one she now wants to use to help others:

“I want to be an advocate for young people with heart failure, especially women, because there are unfortunately a lot of people out there whose symptoms can get overlooked. It took such a long time for me to get diagnosed after living with worsening symptoms for over six months. It doesn't have to be like this.”

Szandra’s story comes as new data from our Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Observatory shows hospital visits for heart failure have risen by 52% in a decade.

Our newly launched CVD Observatory brings together cardiovascular data and insights to help build a clearer picture of heart health across the UK, shining a light on concerning trends and where action is needed.

Heart failure hospital visits have risen by 52% in a decade, reaching a record high in the UK.

The concerning trend has been revealed by our newly launched Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Observatory, which brings cardiovascular data and insights together to give us a clearer picture of the nation’s heart health.

By bringing data together in one place, the CVD Observatory can help reveal hidden patterns, inequalities and where pressures are building, helping focus attention where it’s needed most.

But there is hope. ❤️
We’re powering lifesaving research into heart and circulatory diseases, helping to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat them. Because we want a future where fewer lives are cut short.

“I got my heart off a stranger that I never got to meet."

Beatrix’s own words capture just how extraordinary her story is.

After being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy at just 15 months old, she spent 14 months in hospital before receiving a donor heart.

Today, she’s five, thriving and loving life. We’re so proud to have celebrated her at our Young Heart Hero Awards. ❤️

Consider this your reminder to take your vitamin D.

Our bodies can store vitamin D made from sunlight, but for many people in the UK, those stores won’t reliably last throughout winter.

So, from October to early March, as well as a small amount of vitamin D from our diet, we also need a supplement of 10 micrograms or 400 IU vitamin D per day.

A soak in a hot bath could improve a common painful circulatory disease, by increasing blood flow to the legs. Researchers are investigating whether this hot water therapy can relieve the pain of peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Ken has lived with PAD for almost 40 years. When out and about, Ken used to pretend to look in shop windows - but not because he enjoyed window-shopping. It was to cover his embarrassment at needing to stop because the pain in his legs meant he could only manage to walk around 100 yards.

Now, thanks to a BHF-funded study exploring whether regular heat therapy could help people with PAD, Ken has achieved something he once thought was out of reach. The study is investigating whether regular hot tub sessions can help improve blood flow to the legs, reduce pain and help people with PAD walk further, improving their independence and quality of life.

And, after taking part in the HEATPAD trial, Ken finally reached the top of what he calls his "Everest" - a steep hill in Vernon Park, Stockport, including around 60 steps. "It may sound small, and I still had to stop a couple of times, but it felt like a huge achievement." Ken said.

Ken's experience is an important reminder that research doesn't just change treatments, it can potentially change lives. ❤️
