✨ Code in Action ✨
Upholding professionalism on social media

Social media offers powerful opportunities to share nutrition knowledge, engage audiences, and amplify impact — but it also comes with responsibility.

In this first post of our Code in Action series, we’re focusing on what it means to uphold the AfN Standards of Ethics, Conduct and Performance in online spaces.

For ANutrs and RNutrs, professionalism doesn’t stop at the workplace. It extends to how and whenever we communicate publicly — ensuring that what we share is accurate, evidence‑based, and clearly presented, without exaggeration or misleading claims.

This includes:
-sharing information that reflects the current evidence base
-being transparent about uncertainty where it exists
-avoiding sensationalism or oversimplified messaging
-maintaining respectful, professional interactions with others
-recognising the potential impact of your voice on public understanding

Online platforms move quickly, but professional standards remain constant.

Upholding professionalism on social media helps protect the public, strengthens trust in the nutrition profession, and reinforces the credibility of the information we all rely on.

Our Code in Action series of posts are here to help you explore how the AfN standards guide everyday professional practice — wherever that practice takes place.

One of the most powerful sources of support during the RNutr transfer journey? A mentor who’s been there before.

For our second post in the Transfer Tuesday series, RNutrs share their advice on how to find the right mentor — and how that relationship can make the process feel clearer, calmer, and far less daunting.

From reaching out within your professional network through to making the most of informal conversations, they reflect on what helped them build supportive mentoring relationships and why guidance matters at every stage of the transfer process.

So, whether you’re unsure where to start or are looking to strengthen existing connections, this week’s insights remind us that you don’t have to navigate transfer alone.

Because sometimes, the right conversation can make all the difference. 💬🌱

🌱 Employer Value
Why employing ANutrs and RNutrs strengthens trust, quality and confidence

Across this series, we’ve been exploring how ANutrs and RNutrs add value — from supporting effective use of resources, to enhancing care and outcomes, to strengthening ethical communication.

At the heart of all of this is trust.

ANutrs and RNutrs are regulated professionals who work to defined standards, guided by evidence, ethics and accountability. For employers, this provides assurance that nutrition‑related work — whether in programmes, services, policies or communications — is being delivered with rigour, consistency and credibility.

In practice, this means:
- decisions grounded in robust evidence
- clear professional accountability
- alignment with recognised standards and guidance
- confidence in the quality of nutrition input across settings

In an environment where nutrition information is highly visible and sometimes inconsistent, employing UKVRN registered professionals helps organisations demonstrate integrity, due diligence and leadership in how they approach nutrition.

Ultimately, ANutrs and RNutrs don’t just add expertise — they strengthen the foundations of quality, trust and professionalism that underpin effective services and outcomes.

Thank you for following the Employer Value series. 🌱

📢 New AfN guidance on AI in nutrition practice

AI and machine learning are now part of everyday life, influencing how people access information, make decisions, and engage with health advice. However, research shows that only 42% of people in the UK are willing to trust AI (Gillespie et al., 2025), highlighting the need for these technologies to be used in a professional, safe and ethical way.

To support registrants, the Association for Nutrition (AfN) recently published new guidance to help ANutrs and RNutrs use AI, Machine Learning (ML), and Generative AI (GenAI) responsibly across all areas of practice—from client work and research through to policy, social media, and operations.

Grounded in AfN’s commitment to protect the public, the guidance focuses on practical actions under three key principles:
🔒 Protect
✅ Verify
💬 Disclose

Together, these principles help ensure that AI is used in ways that uphold accuracy, transparency, and trust, while reinforcing the importance of professional judgement.
