A LITTLE PIECE OF HYTHE & SALTWOOD HISTORY – CAN YOU HELP?

We recently came across this photograph showing what appears to be a gathering of veterans, standard bearers and representatives of various organisations, proudly displaying their standards.

It's a wonderful snapshot of our local Remembrance and veterans' history, but we'd love your help in putting some names and dates to the faces.

Do you recognise anyone in the photograph

We would particularly welcome any information on:

- The names of those pictured.
- The year the photograph was taken.
- The occasion or event being marked.
- The location, if you recognise it.

Perhaps you recognise a family member, a fellow veteran or someone you remember from years gone by?

Please share your memories and information in the comments. Even the smallest detail could help us piece together another part of our local history.

A HUGE THANK YOU – BUT WE'RE NOT FINISHED YET! 🌺

As we reach the end of the first week of our Poppy Appeal supermarket collections, I want to take a moment to say a massive thank you to every volunteer who has given up their time to stand behind a collection tin.

Whether you've completed one shift or several, your commitment, enthusiasm and generosity are very much appreciated.

A special thank you also goes to our cadets, school students, adult volunteers and everyone who has stepped forward to support us. Whatever the weather has thrown at us, you've continued to turn up, smile and represent our Armed Forces community with pride.

But we're only halfway there!

We now head into our second week, and I want to encourage everyone to keep that wonderful community spirit going. Every shift matters, every poppy sold makes a difference, and every donation helps us support our Armed Forces community and their families.

As we approach Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, I would also encourage our whole community to come together, stand alongside us and show our support for those who served, those who sacrificed and those who continue to serve today.

A special invitation to our community

Please join us for our Youth-Led Armistice Day Service on 11 November.

This is a particularly important occasion as we give our younger generation the opportunity to take the lead in remembering the past and honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Let's show our young people that their efforts matter and that our community stands firmly behind them.

To all our volunteers, supporters, businesses, schools, cadet units and residents – thank you. You really are what makes our Poppy Appeal possible.

Let's keep the momentum going for week two and make this another memorable year for the Hythe area.

🌺 What the Poppy Means to Me – Part 4

As our What the Poppy Means to Mecampaign continues, we are proud to share another voice from our community.

Every poppy has a story, every voice a meaning, and every remembrance a reminder of those who served, sacrificed and continue to serve.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share what the poppy means to them and help us keep remembrance alive for future generations.

🌺 Our Remembrance Doodle Cube is out in the community!

At the Hythe & Saltwood Branch of the Royal British Legion, we're always looking for new and creative ways to engage with our local community, particularly during Remembrance.

When our Branch Chairman spotted the Skegness Branch's Doodle Cube, an idea was born!

A big thank you to Eric, Barry and our very own Hythe Ted for helping bring our own Branch Doodle Cube to life.

It's already been a resident at Martello Boutique Care Home, and today it joined the Albion Private Members Club for their drawing and poetry competition.

It's wonderful to see our Doodle Cube getting out and about, giving people the opportunity to express what Remembrance means to them through their own words, drawings and reflections.

Thank you to everyone helping us make Remembrance a shared community experience.

🌺 Branch Drop-In Cancellation Notice 🌺

Due to our branch's extensive programme of activities across the community during the Remembrance period, this Tuesday's drop-in session at 101 High Street will unfortunately be cancelled.

However, branch members will still be out and about supporting students from Brockhill Performing Arts College as they create this year's Remembrance Window display.

The students put a great deal of time, effort and creativity into ensuring that remembrance remains visible within our community. If you are passing by, please take a moment to stop, view their work and thank them for their contribution to honouring those who served and sacrificed.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our regular drop-in sessions soon.

🌺 Remembrance Sunday Rehearsals 🌺

This year, we will be joining Hythe Town Council for the following Remembrance Sunday rehearsals:

📍 War Memorial
🗓️ Thursday 5 November
⏰ 10:30am - 11:30am

🗓️ Friday 6 November
⏰ 5.30 pm

These rehearsals provide an opportunity for members of our community who will be taking an active part in the Remembrance Sunday service to see where their contribution fits within the proceedings and to become familiar with the format of the event.

We encourage everyone involved to attend if possible. Your participation helps ensure that our community can come together to honour and remember those who have served and sacrificed.

A Big Thank You from the Mayor of Hythe 🌺

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Hythe, Councillor Pauline Curran, who took the time to visit all three of our Hythe supermarkets – Waitrose, Aldi and Sainsbury's – to personally thank the cadet units and adult volunteers supporting this year's Poppy Appeal.

Her visits were a lovely gesture of appreciation for members of Kent (Marine) Cadet Force, 99 Sqn Folkestone RAF Air Cadets and Folkestone and Hythe Sea Cadets, including their Royal Marines Cadets alongside their dedicated adult volunteers and instructors.

It was wonderful to see our Mayor recognising the commitment, enthusiasm and generosity of our younger generation and the adults who give their time to support them.

Our sincere thanks to the Mayor for making these visits, and to all our cadets, adult volunteers and instructors for playing such an important part in this year's appeal.

Last night, Branch Officers were delighted to attend the Kent (Marine) Cadet Force 2026 Awards Evening, celebrating the achievements, dedication and commitment of our young cadets.

Our Branch Chairman had the honour of presenting The Best Cadet Award which was very kindly donated by a fellow Branch member.

It was a real privilege to be part of an evening recognising the hard work, enthusiasm and achievements of these young people.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all the adult volunteers and instructorswho give so generously of their time, knowledge and commitment to guide, encourage and inspire our cadets. Your contribution makes a real difference.

Congratulations to all the award recipients, and our thanks to the Kent (Marine) Cadet Force for the invitation and for all they do to develop the next generation.
