It is with the deepest sadness that I share the news that our founder and devoted trustee, Marie Cates, has passed away. After a long illness, Marie remained a beacon of inspiration and positivity, guiding us with her wisdom and kindness right up until the end.
In the heart of Eastern Uganda—where challenges are many and resources are scarce—Marie gave freely and without expectation for decades. Through her kindness, tireless fundraising, and hard work, she built more than homes and projects: she built hope. She believed that every act of generosity, no matter how small, could change a life, and she lived by that belief every day.
Her giving was never about recognition. It was about people—the children who could go to school, the families and communities who could dream of a brighter future, and especially the women who worked tirelessly to provide for their loved ones. She gave her time, her energy, and her heart, quietly shaping lives and lifting spirits in ways that will be felt for generations to come.
