British Society of Lifestyle Medicine

British Society of Lifestyle Medicine Preventing, treating, managing and reversing chronic disease using evidence-based lifestyle medicine. Visit www.bslm.org.uk for more information.

Imagine a world free from an ever increasing burden of disease related to living an

unhealthy lifestyle; a world free from disease which is currently suppressing the wellbeing

of individuals, straining society healthcare systems and driving inequality. The current

management of lifestyle-related diseases is dominated by the use of pharmaceuticals, but

this approach does not tackle the root cau

ses of such diseases. The British Society of

Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM) believes that using Lifestyle as Medicine is a more effective

and sustainable way of managing illness. Lifestyle Medicine is not only simple and cost-effective, it empowers individuals to take

their health into their own hands. BSLM is building a multidisciplinary network of

healthcare professionals who believe in re-energising the healthcare system and

reframing it away from disease towards health. We are a group who want to collaborate

by sharing our knowledge of using Lifestyle as Medicine to build a reliable, evidence-
informed resource which can help you and your patients to lead healthier lifestyles. BSLM

warmly invites you to join an energetic, resourceful and creative society and to be part of

a global alliance for sustainable healthy change. Let’s turn the tide of disease for the

greater good of our patients, our communities, ourselves and our planet.

You may have seen a proposed shift from PCOS to PMOS, but what does this mean for lifestyle medicine?💭

This change reflects a growing recognition that PCOS is a multisystem condition involving metabolic, endocrine, and reproductive health, rather than a single organ diagnosis.

For lifestyle medicine, this reinforces the notion that effective care starts with understanding the whole person, rather than focusing on isolated symptoms or systems 👏

It also highlights the importance of prevention-focused care and approaches that support metabolic health alongside hormonal and reproductive health across the lifespan.

As Dr Chetna Patel explores in the full blog, this is less about a change in labels and more about how we understand and frame the condition in clinical practice 💡

The Government’s new mental health strategy places renewed focus on prevention and treatment 📰

Hear from our President, Dr Alex Maxwell, on what this means for lifestyle medicine and how wider factors contribute to supporting children and young people’s mental wellbeing.

Dr Maxwell reflects on the importance of early action, given that many mental health conditions first emerge in adolescence and early adulthood. He also highlights the role of everyday influences such as sleep, physical activity, nutrition, social connection and the digital environment 🤝

British Society of Lifestyle Medicine supports a joined-up, prevention-led approach across health, education and wider society, and welcomes the opportunity to contribute to how these approaches are strengthened in practice.

What's your favourite memory from a BSLM conference evening event? 🎉

Over the years, our evening event has become one of the most talked about parts of the conference weekend. As one regular attendee puts it:

"Every conference I go to I have found the Gala dinner demonstrates the essence of the BSLM charity. It’s fun, authentic and welcoming. I truly think it’s something not to be missed. For me over the years I have attended the conference, these evenings provide a chance to get to know new people and reconnect with those I know. To have a chance to relax, laugh and dance together, as well as catch up on activities and ideas we have for sharing lifestyle medicine in the real world. The simple experience of mingling with the community of like-mindedness makes this a highlight of what is a fabulous few days!"

This year we're back with Soirée at The Slate at Warwick University, and we're marking 10 years of BSLM while we're at it. Good food, great company, and a fantastic setting 👏

Drop your favourite memory in the comments below 💬

This Men’s Health Week, we are focusing on social connection in men’s health and what the evidence tells us about its impact on health outcomes and prevention 💡

The World Health Organization has identified social connection as an important determinant of health, highlighting its association with physical and mental health outcomes and increased risk of early mortality. An estimated 1 in 6 people globally experience loneliness, with social isolation and loneliness associated with poorer health outcomes.

For men’s health, this raises important considerations around support networks, engagement with healthcare, and the role of connection in long-term wellbeing.

Within Lifestyle Medicine, healthy relationships and social connection are recognised as one of the six pillars of health. They form part of a whole-person approach to prevention, helping us understand health not only through individual behaviours, but also through the social environments in which people live.

For a deeper exploration of this topic, read our President Dr Alex Maxwell's blog, Boys, Men and the Quiet Crisis We Can No Longer Ignore:

As healthcare continues to shift towards prevention, some conversations only grow in relevance over time 💡

In a BSLM blog published in 2021, Dr Hugh Bethell explored the role of exercise in preventing and managing many of the chronic conditions that place the greatest burden on individuals, communities and health services. He also highlighted its potential to reduce frailty, support healthy ageing and extend healthspan.

Five years on, this feels like an even more relevant conversation. As healthcare systems face rising rates of chronic disease and increasing demand, how can we do more to embed physical activity into prevention and care?

Make sure to revisit Dr Hugh Bethell's blog, Exercise - The Answer to Nearly Everything: https://bslm.org.uk/exercise-the-answer-to-nearly-everything-2/

We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. How do you see exercise being used most effectively in healthcare today?

We're delighted that Dr Hugh Bethell will be returning to the BSLM blog over the coming months with a new series of articles. Keep an eye on our channels for updates!

Have you seen our new BSLM2026 Saturday only in-person ticket? 💭

We’ve been listening to feedback from nurses, dentists and allied health professionals about the key barriers to attending, particularly cost and time away from work.

This new option provides 1-day access on Saturday only, at a reduced rate and without catering, made possible through our hybrid conference format which enables additional in-person capacity.

The Saturday programme is designed to provide strong foundations in Lifestyle Medicine, alongside practical skills you can take directly into clinical practice 💡

If you’ve been considering joining us, this may be a more accessible way to take part! Learn more on our website now:https://bslm.org.uk/events/bslm-2026-annual-medical-conference/
