What are the most important safety tips for women travelling abroad?

We asked Bethany, founder of the campaign, to share the five things she always does to stay safe while travelling.

Her advice 💬

- Keep travel insurance documents accessible and share with someone you trust

- Make sure someone knows exactly where you’re travelling and your plans

- Avoid spirits abroad and choose sealed drinks to reduce the risk of methanol poisoning. Remember: say NO to free drinks.

- Carry essentials such as cash, a power bank and a data plan so you’re prepared if something goes wrong

- Be mindful of strangers, holiday romances and situations that could leave you vulnerable to drink spiking, theft or other risks

Bethany’s advice is shaped by personal experience. Her friend Simone tragically died from methanol poisoning while travelling in Laos.

She now works to raise awareness so other travellers have the information they need to stay safe.

Which of these travel safety tips do you already follow?

We asked Maya about her solo travel experience.
Her answer on drinking?

No free drinks.
Not overdoing it.
Knowing what to stay clear of.

What that looked like in practice:

🟠 skipping shots, cocktails, buckets + jugs
🟠 choosing beer, wine or soft drinks when out
🟠 if drinking spirits, only buying sealed bottles and drinking them back at her accommodation

Methanol poisoning is rare BUT when it happens, it’s sudden and life-threatening.
A few smart choices can make all the difference.

Meet Jen Kaarlo x StyleBomb – the big sister you wish you had before your first solo trip.

She’s a travel writer and solo travel pro (52 countries and counting, many of them solo, or with her Cavapoo Céline).

Her advice?

“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself… think of it like training for a marathon... And remember no one is looking at you the way you think they are.”

From small digital safety tweaks to sharing your plans with someone you trust, it’s often the simple habits that make the biggest difference.

Travelling solo isn’t about doing everything perfectly.
It’s about building confidence as you go.

not everything you need to think about before your hol is obvious.

the UK Health Security Agency recently reported a rise in some travel-related mosquito infections, including a 43% increase in chikungunya cases in 2025.

the good news? there’s been a drop in dengue fever cases.

and the even better news? mosquito-borne illnesses are one of the easiest travel risks to prepare for.
