Pool days are meant to be fun.

But when you’re on holiday with your partner, friends or family, it can be easy to assume someone else has eyes on the kids.

Make it clear who's watching. And explain what 'keeping an eye on the kids' really means.
Hint: it's not scrolling and looking up once every 5 minutes.

If you need a break, say it out loud and confirm who’s taking over.

Never assume someone else is watching.

Drowning can happen in seconds and in complete silence — it rarely looks the way it does in the movies.

Even when there’s a lifeguard, remember your eyes matter most.

Introducing the wonderful Claire Mulligan – travel lawyer, industry expert and one of our trustees.

Claire has spent 30 years working with the travel industry and currently leads the travel team at DWF. From overseas incidents and injury claims to crisis management, regulation and health & safety, she’s seen first-hand just how important traveller safety is.

Now, she’s bringing that experience to STF, giving back to an industry she’s worked alongside for three decades.

Before the kids make a beeline for the pool…

1. Make sure they’re wearing a bright or neon swimsuit - with no dangly bits that can get caught!
2. Make sure they understand what flotation aids can (and can’t) do
3. Know where the shallow and deep ends are – and make sure they do too

And remember: nothing replaces your attention.

Drowning happens quickly and quietly, and without wanting to terrify you, children die in swimming pools on holiday every year.

A career in travel teaches you a thing or two about what can go wrong on holiday.

Paul, our Chair of Trustees, shares some of his personal experiences that have changed how he travels – from pool safety and riptides to CO alarms.

Today, Paul and his wife Angela welcome guests at White House Cottages, where safety is woven into the guest experience – from the information they share with solo female travellers to e-bike safety briefings before guests head out to explore.
