What does it look like to create a classroom for our youngest students where they have both independence and the structures that help them learn and grow? Veteran Early Childhood teacher Alicia Galvan will lead a session in her expertly designed classroom where participants can experience this kind of learning environment firsthand. They will explore student-driven centers, engage in fun approaches to transitions, and use improvisational techniques to think about how to engage their students.

Aleta reflected on a powerful Speak Truth session where students and teachers came together for an intergenerational conversation led by Speak Truth students.

Together, they explored grades, homework, AI, and the expectations placed on young people today. Aleta shared two meaningful takeaways: students are thinking deeply about the value and impact of grades, and teachers are listening with care, curiosity, and openness.

The joy in the room came from the active listening happening between generations. Students and educators were not just speaking—they were hearing one another. That kind of grounded, honest conversation is what helps us move toward a more thoughtful and engaging school experience.

At Inspired Teaching, we believe student voice matters, and Speak Truth continues to show what is possible when young people and educators lead with curiosity, reflection, and mutual respect.

Sabrina Burroughs is a kindergarten teacher at John Lewis Elementary School in Washington, DC and an Inspired Teaching Fellow. She joined our Teaching with Improvisation Fellowship during the 2024-2025 school year, and in the time since, has been an integral member of the Inspired Teaching community.

We have had the pleasure of visiting her classroom many times as part of the Fellowship and, as you can find in several past issues of Hooray For Monday, Ms. Burroughs is truly an Inspired Teacher.

It was a special treat to have the opportunity to connect with Ms. Burroughs again—and her former student-teacher and now teaching colleague, Ben Wilhelm. Learning more about the value they found in their mentor/mentee relationship four years ago, and as across-the-hall neighbors today, offers a glimpse into what is possible—for morale, student outcomes, and school connectedness—when colleagues work alongside one another with intention.

May’s Inspired Teaching Challenge is to engage your .

Sure, that could mean signing up for a new class or researching a new topic. Those are both great ways to think critically. But one of the beautiful things about critical thought is that it—like curiosity—is available to all of us, anywhere, at any time. And this month’s resources will help you tap into yours in unexpected ways.

This week’s issue of Hooray For Monday is a contribution from an Inspired Teaching Fellow who we’ve worked with for many years now, Kim Kelley. Ms. Kelley is a teacher at Goodwill Excel Center DC here in Washington, DC, and her high school classroom is a bit unusual:

Kim’s students are non-traditional. They’re learners who, for many reasons, did not get their high school diploma on the first go.

Teacher Appreciation Week is a reminder to honor the educators who help shape curious, thoughtful, and engaged learners every day.

Thank you to the teachers who lead with care, spark inquiry, and create classrooms where students are seen, heard, and inspired to think deeply.

It has been an absolute joy to spend decades teaching—and learning from—the diverse array of people we’ve had the privilege to meet here in Washington, DC and in so many school settings across the country and around the world.

Each day offers new moments to feel gratitude for the work these teachers do; it’s impossible to pick out any one example. So, in the spirit of , Aleta shares just a few in this week's Hooray For Monday that capture three decades’ worth of why we are so appreciative of teachers.

What is one resource every single classroom has in abundance?

People. And each person—each student—in offers a wealth of resources: experiences, perspectives, unique skills.

In this week’s Hooray For Monday, Jenna’s conversation with Michael Skinner, board president of in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, DC, highlights the many ways the resource of community can be harnessed to make real change, wherever we see it’s needed

(Thank you to Hill Community Foundation for their support of Inspired Teaching programming and resources. Their partnership made possible the professional learning workshop that connected Inspired Teaching with Michael and many other inspiring nonprofit leaders in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.)
