Is CO₂ slaughter humane?

Millions of pigs in the UK are still slaughtered using high concentrations of CO₂ gas.

Pigs can thrash, gasp and try desperately to escape. The gas causes severe pain in their eyes, nose and throat, and it can take up to 60 seconds for them to fall unconscious.

Despite concerns being raised more than 20 years ago, this method is still used for 90% of UK pigs.

Eight months ago, the Government committed to consulting on a ban. We're still waiting.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! From today, Brittany Ferries finally stops transporting live animals on its ships! 🎉🐄

This follows our tireless campaigning with our brilliant supporters and Southampton Animal Action, Dorset Animal Action, Ethical Farming Ireland, Welfarm, FOUR PAWS, L214 Ethique et Animaux and Eurogroup for Animals.

But we're not done yet.

The pressure is now on Irish Ferries, the last company to still carry animals on the long, gruelling journey from Ireland to mainland Europe.

Worst of all, this includes hungry unweaned calves, whose legal feeding requirements are not being met.

The tide is turning on live exports. As countries like the Netherlands move towards ending imports by 2028, Ireland has an opportunity to embrace a better approach that benefits farmers while sparing animals from suffering.

Over 70,000 people have already taken our action calling on Irish Ferries to end its involvement in live animal transport.

🚇 Every stop: cage

For millions of commuters, the crowded conditions on the Tube are a temporary inconvenience. For almost six million hens in the UK, confinement is their everyday reality.

Earlier this year, the Government consulted on whether cages for laying hens should be phased out. The consultation closed in March.

Five months later, we're still waiting for the results.

That's the estimated cost of this year's poor harvests to UK farmers.

As heatwaves and drought take their toll on crops, farmed animals are often the hidden victims, struggling to cope with extreme temperatures.

Climate change is already affecting farmers, animals and the food on our plates.

That's why we need to move away from factory farming and towards nature-friendly farming that works with nature, not against it.
