This Black History Month, we're highlighting three Black agricultural innovators whose work continues to influence how we farm today.

George Washington Carver, Booker T. Whatley and Leah Penniman each championed approaches that support healthier soils, stronger communities and a more sustainable food system. Their contributions have helped shape the regenerative and nature-friendly farming practices that are increasingly important in addressing today's environmental and food security challenges.

🐄 The UK's dairy industry is getting bigger. But nature is paying the price.

A new report from our friends at The Wildlife Trusts warns that the rise of intensive “mega-dairies” is increasing pollution risks, putting pressure on rivers, wildlife and the environment. It found that dairy activities were responsible for 71% of serious agricultural pollution incidents in England.

The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way. The report highlights how nature-friendly farming can reduce pollution, improve resilience and support farmers at the same time.

It's time to back farming systems that work with nature, not against it.

🍽️ This World Food Day, let's talk about one of the biggest sources of food waste we've been taught not to see.

Around the world, vast areas of land are used to produce large quantities of grain and soy to feed animals in factory farming systems, rather than being used to grow food for people. In the process, most of those calories are lost.

Factory farming doesn't just harm animals. It's an inefficient use of land, crops and resources at a time when millions of people face food insecurity.

If we're serious about building a food system that works for people, animals and the planet, we need to move beyond factory farming.

🐔 wagamama says it cares deeply about ‘continuous improvement’. Does breaking its promise to improve chicken welfare sound like continuous improvement?

Seven years ago, Wagamama promised to stop serving Frankenchickens. But now they’re keeping them on the menu.

Instead of switching to a healthier slower-growing breed, the company will continue to serve chickens who have been bred to grow so fast their legs struggle to support their huge bodies.

These animals regularly endure lameness, heart disease and painful sores, with little to do but suffer. Unable to behave like chickens, it is not a life worth living.
