Surrey CPRE - The Countryside Charity

Surrey CPRE - The Countryside Charity We are the Surrey Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). We are the only charity whose mission The Green Belt is being weakened.

Green spaces are a lifeline for both people and wildlife, but Surrey’s are under threat. The Green Belt around Surrey has done more than anything else to keep Surrey green and pleasant but the county is under increasing pressure to build more houses, with fields and farmland being offered up for development. CPRE campaigns to protect precious green spaces, for the sake of present and future genera

tions. Surrey’s Green Belt countryside is vital for public health and well-being, for nature and biodiversity, for food-production, and to reduce climate-change. That’s why CPRE plays an active role in the planning process, to ensure that green spaces are not sacrificed unnecessarily. We contribute to public consultations and respond to planning applications that affect the Green Belt.

Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental risks to our health, contributing to over 30,000 deaths every year in the UK.

Reducing harmful air pollution will have huge benefits for our health as well as helping to protect the landscapes, wildlife and countryside we all love.

Clean Air Day, organised by Global Action Plan, is encouraging people to ask their local councillors to become Local Clean Air Champions, helping to drive action in their communities to reduce air pollution and protect residents’ health.

We’ll never stop talking about how lucky we are to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside in Surrey. And we’ll never stop encouraging you to get out there and enjoy it.

But, we have one important caveat…always enjoy local walks responsibly. 😉

Our beautiful countryside only stays beautiful if we look after it. And it’s so easy to do if you follow the Countryside Code when out and about.

A good rule of thumb is to always leave the countryside as you found it. This means:

🚯 Taking litter home with you.

🐜 If you pass through a gate that was closed, close it after you.

👣 Keeping to footpaths where possible to avoid damaging plant life.

🐕 Making sure dogs don’t disturb local wildlife.

🫐 If foraging* take only what you need and ask permission from landowners first.

What’s your favourite green space for a stomp around Surrey?

*Foraging in the UK is generally legal but there are guidelines and regulations around this. Make sure you know and understand the rules before heading out foraging.

There’s something steadying about the countryside in all its quiet detail. The hedgerows, open fields, and familiar paths that are there for us to enjoy.

These spaces don’t need to be dramatic to matter. They’re part of everyday life, offering calm, connection, and a reminder of the world beyond our busy routines.

At CPRE Surrey, we care about protecting these landscapes, not just for their beauty, but for the sense of wellbeing they can bring to all of us.

It’s Great Big Green Week, so we’re thinking about how our green spaces shape how we live, breathe, and connect with the countryside around us.

At CPRE Surrey, we’re proud to stand up for the landscapes that make Surrey unique. We protect green spaces, support nature recovery, and help ensure our countryside is valued for generations to come.

Great Big Green Week is a reminder that small actions add up:

💚 Protect local green spaces

💚 Support nature-friendly choices

💚 Get involved in your community

💚 Speak up for the countryside you love

Because when we protect green spaces, we protect more than just the land, we protect wellbeing, wildlife, and the places that make home feel like home.

Today is World Environment Day, a helpful reminder of the importance of protecting and restoring the natural environment around us.

Here in Surrey, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful countryside, from rolling farmland to ancient woodlands and green spaces that support both wildlife and our wellbeing. But it’s important we don't take this for granted.

CPRE Surrey is here to speak up for the countryside. Ensuring our green spaces receive the care, thoughtful planning, and long-term protection they need to ensure they remain for future generations to enjoy.

This World Environment Day, let’s all take a moment to think about the choices we make to put nature first.

June brings a real sense of summer to the Surrey countryside 🌿☀️

The landscape is looking greener, fuller and more colourful by the day. Meadows are thriving, wildlife is busy everywhere you look, and the longer evenings make it the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the natural spaces around us.

Here are just a few things you may spot across Surrey this June:

🌿 Wildflowers are flourishing in meadows, roadside verges and field edges, providing vital food sources for pollinators.

🌿 Bees, butterflies and other insects are especially active during warm weather, bringing movement and colour to gardens and green spaces.

🌿 Young birds are becoming easier to spot as many species continue raising their chicks through early summer.

🌿 Woodland paths are cool and shaded beneath thick green canopies, offering welcome shelter on hotter days.

🌿 Grasses and hedgerows are growing tall and dense, creating important habitats for wildlife across the countryside.

🌿 Longer, lighter evenings give us more time to slow down, explore and appreciate Surrey’s beautiful landscapes.

June is a wonderful reminder of how rich, diverse and important our countryside spaces are 💚

After an incredible week at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, we’re reflecting on the success of CPRE’s On the Edge garden.

The garden not only received a Gold Medal and Garden of the Year in the Show Garden category, it also helped bring CPRE’s message to a huge new audience.

What many people may not know is that several of the organisations involved are based in Surrey, including The Outdoor Room, Bamber Wallis, and Crocus.

It’s a brilliant example of local creativity contributing to a national conversation about protecting and regenerating the countryside around our towns and cities.

💚 Thank you to everyone who helped share and support the campaign. 💚

Even the smallest garden, balcony or green corner can become a mini nature reserve.

This Garden Wildlife Week (26th May - 1st June) we are thinking about how simple actions can make a big difference for local wildlife. Things like:
🌱 Leaving a patch of grass to grow wild
💧 Putting out shallow water for birds and insects
🌸 Choosing pollinator-friendly plants
🍂 Creating small log or leaf piles for shelter
🚫 Avoiding pesticides where possible

In counties like ours, gardens create vital stepping stones for nature. They can help our local hedgehogs, bees, butterflies and birds find food, shelter and safe spaces to thrive.

Together, our gardens can help keep Surrey wild for wildlife. 💚
