📖 Book Recommendation 📖

Nourishing Scotland by Pete Ritchie

This book explores how Scotland can transform its food system in the next 25 years: cutting waste, tackling food insecurity, improving animal welfare and protecting climate and nature.

Following on from our post sharing Scotland's Launch Event for the International Network for Public Restaurants, it also draws on Pete Ritchie’s work on public restaurants - state supported places where everyone can get a good, affordable meal as part of normal public infrastructure.

- Focus on town centres and identified food deserts

Who can apply?

Applications are invited from a wide variety of groups and organisations including charities, Housing Associations, community organisations and private sector organisations. The Commonwealth Games are coming back to Glasgow in 2026. To go alongside the event, the Climate Action Hub can offer a grant of up to £10,000 to fund projects that create meaningful engagement around climate action and environmental issues.

For the proposal, they are looking for the most interesting answer to the following question:

What does a meaningful connection between the Commonwealth Games (or sports in general) and climate action look like and how might we build on that connection to generate conversations that leave a lasting impact on participants’ perception of climate change/action?

As the deadline is tight - they are happy for applications to represent a well thought out idea to be developed if not a fully mapped out proposal.

⏰ Deadline - 23.59 Sunday 31st May

🤝 Solidarity Share for The Wash House Garden

Here at The Wash House Garden, we believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious, organic food. Each year, we provide hundreds of veg boxes and donate tons of our crops directly to locals who need them most.

In 2026, we want to go further: we want to host a monthly Community Banquet and provide our neighbours with a free, nourishing meal around our dining table. Our friends at Kin Kitchen will help us transform our veggies into delicious dishes, and
our community will be able to enjoy hot food exactly where it was grown.

As a community-facing garden project, we rely mostly on grants and donations to exist. So, we’re calling on Glasgow’s businesses to help us make these Community Banquets a reality. We’re looking for sponsors who can cover or contribute to the cost of one of these banquets (or more if you like!) to run throughout the summer of 2026.

Each meal is costed at £470 to cover all food, equipment and staff expenditure, and will fill up to 30 adult bellies. If this idea aligns with the values of your business and you’d like to contribute to food justice in Glasgow, please consider donating.

For more information on how to sponsor, get in touch at [email protected] or visit www.thewashhousegarden.co.uk
