Today we launch the Scottish Music EDIA Manifesto and Action Framework.

Developed with our EDIA Advisory Group and shaped through consultation with people working across Scotland’s music industry, this work provides a shared approach to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

The Manifesto sets out shared values for the sector, while the Action Framework helps translate those values into practical action.

This is a voluntary commitment focused on reflection, learning and continuous improvement. It recognises that meaningful action will look different depending on who you are, how you work and the resources available to you.

We’re proud to launch this work alongside more than 60 founding signatories from across Scotland’s music industry.

Founding signatories were secured through a pre-launch engagement phase involving organisations and individuals who contributed to the development of the Manifesto and Action Framework, members of the Music Organisation Development Network (MODN), music-focused Creative Scotland Multi-Year Funded organisations, highly engaged SMIA members, and previous The SAY Award nominees.

Today, the initiative opens to all individuals and organisations working across Scotland’s music industry, who are invited to become signatories and commit to its shared vision.

We also recognise that this work did not begin – and doesn’t end – with the publication of these documents. Feedback, dialogue and ongoing learning are central to the Manifesto and Action Framework, and we welcome continued conversation as this work develops.

The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) unequivocally condemns and opposes the racist, anti-migrant violence and intimidation witnessed across Scotland over the past few days.

We stand in solidarity with our Global Majority members, colleagues, collaborators, peers and communities, and with everyone who has been impacted by these events – especially those who are feeling unsafe, anxious or affected by recent events.

Scotland's music industry is built on diversity, creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. There is no place for racism, hatred or discrimination within our sector or our society.

We know that statements alone are not enough.

Change requires sustained action, ongoing accountability and a long-term commitment to addressing the barriers and inequalities that continue to affect people across our society and within our industry.

We recognise our responsibility to contribute to this work and remain committed to doing so.

The Scottish Refugee Council recommends:

“If you feel you are in immediate and life-threatening danger, please call the police on 999. If you are concerned or in doubt, please call 101 for non-emergencies.”

They also provide guidance on reporting a hate crime. The links for all this can be found on this post via - https://bit.ly/4anbCqQ

Following last week’s Scottish Parliament election, we look forward to working with both MSPs and Ministers in the The Scottish Government to strengthen, empower and unite Scotland’s music industry, increasing its economic, social and cultural value both at home and on the world stage.

We’d like to express our sincere thanks to all of those in the last Scottish Parliament who supported and championed Scotland’s music industry, including outgoing Culture Secretary Angus Robertson for Edinburgh Central who served in the role since 2021.

In the coming months, we will publish two key strategic documents – co-designed with the sector – which will set out a shared vision and strategic framework for the future development of Scotland’s music industry. We look forward to working with the next Scottish Government to help realise that vision.
