James will be taking part in Dash of colour in memory of his friend Ben. Ben, who was only 29 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer, was referred to Phyllis Tuckwell when after a while, it was discovered it had spread to his spine.
“Ben was over six foot; he was a really big bloke,” said James. “His mum and dad were in their 70s, and they lived with his little boy, who was only six at the time. Ben always wanted kids. Even when we were younger, that's all he ever talked about. Then he got married and had his son and that was his whole life. Everything he did was for his little boy. That's one of the tough things. He wasn't worried about dying, he was just worried about leaving his kid behind. I think he felt really guilty about it. The thought of everything Ben had to go through at the end, if he had had to do that at home, with his son there, that would have been terrible. If he'd had to have his final weeks at home, it would have been a very difficult situation. It's just so much for a kid of that age to comprehend. To have to see it all first-hand would have been shocking. I can't even think what would have happened if Phyllis Tuckwell hadn’t been able to take Ben. He stayed on the IPU for his last weeks, and they gave him around the clock care, 24 hours a day."
After Ben had died, his son, attended our Little Rays bereavement group, a six week after school group that supports primary school aged children who have been affected by the death of a loved one.
James decided he wanted to fundraise for Phyllis Tuckwell to show his support for the care we gave to Ben and his family.
James has already taken on many challenges but is really looking forward to Dash of Colour, and joining in with people of all ages to and to ensure that we can continue to support people like Ben and his family.
