🍪 A warm welcome, a wonderful community and a trip down memory lane!
As part of her role supporting Maitland House, our home in Reading, our Community Liaison Tracey Morgan had the pleasure of visiting Whitley Community Hub in Reading today during Whitley Festival week.
The Hub really does what it says on the tin — it’s a hub of activity, connection and support for the local community. Tracey received such a warm welcome and took the opportunity to learn a little about Whitley’s history courtesy of https://www.facebook.com/groups/WhitleyCommunityMuseum/
One name in particular took Tracey straight back to her childhood: George Palmer, co-founder of Reading’s famous Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory.
As a child, Tracey often spent Saturday afternoons shopping in Reading with her mum. On the drive out, they’d reach the traffic lights by the enormous biscuit factory, and she’d eagerly wind down the car window to catch that wonderful smell of biscuits baking! 🥰
That memory has stayed with Tracey. Even now, whenever she passes that junction, she’s transported straight back to those Saturday afternoons — and still misses that unmistakable smell!
For Tracey, the visit was a lovely reminder of how places, people and even a familiar smell can connect us to our past — and how much local history and shared memories mean to our communities. ❤️
