Just 3 little hoglets

After being found away from any parent or nest even after a thorough look these little ones made their way into the centre, they were entirely dependent on mum at the age they came in so required rearing

Now they're a little bit older and have begun their weaning stage, now lapping up milk and chum from their licky mat inbetween naps

Even at a young age, hedgehogs rely heavily on their incredible sense of smell to navigate the world around them. Their eyesight isn't particularly strong, so scent helps them find food, recognise familiar surroundings and explore safely as they grow

Some of our youngest gull chicks were let out of their initial housing into a bigger space now they're a bit bigger, and some of them couldn't wait to stretch their wings and practise their jumping πŸ˜†

Whilst some of the older ones who have had the space for longer mainly snoozed

We currently have 86 gull chick patients in, all at varying stages and ages

Lots of cleaning and feeding for our wildlife team but it's worth every second

We are looking for a dedicated Wildlife Assistant to join our hard-working team here at RSPCA Mallydams Wood!

What you’ll need to bring:

A brilliant member of public rescued these 2 goslings after being spotted dodging traffic in Tunbridge Wells, unfortunately others had reported that the mum had been chased off earlier in the day

Getting them straight to us on Saturday, they were able to rest and have some food and have now been given access to a larger pen with lots of grass, food and a lovely little pool to bob around in

Very much in safe hands now and will be with us until old enough for release

Thank you to the kind member of public for stepping in as this could have been a very different outcome!

These two beautiful barn owls recently arrived with us from our friends at Folly Wildlife Rescue to complete the final stages of their rehabilitation.

After settling in well, they've already started making themselves at home and can now be found perched up high in their enclosure, where they're building strength, confidence and flight skills ready for life back in the wild.

It's always a privilege to work alongside other wildlife rescue centres to give patients the best possible chance of success. These youngsters have come such a long way already, and we're looking forward to watching them continue to progress over the coming weeks.

Thank you to everyone involved in their rescue and care so far, teamwork like this helps ensure every animal gets the second chance they deserve. πŸ¦‰πŸ¦‰ 🩷

πŸ•ŠοΈ Pigeon Appreciation Day πŸ•ŠοΈ

Pigeons are one of our most beloved patients - we see around 600 a year through our doors. Feral/Town pigeons have a history so entwined with our own, they deserve so much more love than they get.

We really love this audio by Facts and Fineliners so decided to use it with some of our own clips of our wonderful patients πŸ’™πŸ•ŠοΈ This is an older video, but we will post about our current and recent pigeon patients later today.

These 2 little swallows arrived as nestlings and they've all of a sudden popped into fledglings

Still taking half hourly hand feeds by our team, a mix of tasty crickets and worms full of nutrients to aid their feather and bone development. They've moved to a bigger inside aviary to practise flying and perching 🩷

Summer's here, and so are we - caring for wildlife every day πŸ’™ While our rehabbers are busy giving dedicated care to each animal, our veterinary team are checking on healing progress and providing medical treatment.

These are three of the lovely patients our vet Nichola and vet nurse Cassey looked after on Monday this week - a gull chick who had been wounded by another bird, a wood pigeon who became injured in the windy weather, and a dunnock who had contact with a cat.

That same day, as well as examining new patients that arrived, they also checked the recovery progress of:

1 House Sparrow
3 Blue t**s
1 GS Woodpecker with head trauma
6 Wood pigeons
3 Town pigeons - one needing a toe amputation, one having his eye checked, another needing an x-ray
1 Crow
1 Collared Dove
1 Hedgehog
1 Rabbit
1 Adult Mallard.. And gave a seal their last de-worming treatment!

These mucky chaps are just one of the groups of corvids we're currently rearing

Despite their talent for getting food absolutely everywhere, they've recently mastered bathing themselves and have even started making their way up onto higher perches rather than staying on the floor , which is lovely to see 🩷

Jackdaws are wonderful birds, if not a little impatient when it comes to waiting their turn for food πŸ˜† Watching them grow and develop really highlights just how resilient they are, and how dedicated their parents must be in the wild to keep up with such demanding youngsters!
