ROTARY IN ACTION HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT!
Hugely interesting talk at last week’s meeting from Duncan Collinson showing exactly how Rotary are in action - helping the environment here in our own area!
Four years ago in 2022, Duncan as head of Rotary in Southern Scotland, decided on a course of action to help one of Rotary’s key areas of focus, the environment.
Three projects were specifically selected from local Rotary clubs to be the focus of this action.
A key aspect of these initiatives were that they should all involve local volunteers, schools and community groups.
The projects were -
* Community orchard planting in the Currie Balerno area of Edinburgh.
In conjunction with local community groups, residents, schools and the Pentlands Eco network a range of fruit trees were planted.
* Borders Forest Trust Project - creating woodland areas of native species with Primary school children.
This project worked with local schoolchildren to capture their imagination, inspire them to connect with the natural world and help the planet.
* Tarras Valley Nature Reserve - rewild, restore and revive community land in the Borders.
A huge and ambitious project to restore and revive natural boggy peatlands to their original eco status, including the replanting of native trees and ground covering shrubs to assist the depleted native wildlife, and to restore upland pools and prevent water run-off.
Rotary invested £30,000 and many volunteer hours in these three projects, and we are delighted to say that with the assistance of local helpers all three projects are now complete.
