Sleep Action

Sleep Action The UK’s oldest sleep charity and leading provider of sleep support, training, and resources. Often parents have to sleep in shifts for months or years.

The Challenge

Children with additional support needs are far more likely to have serious sleep problems than other children. They may not settle, or wake frequently throughout the night or very early in the morning. Children can be very noisy or distressed and cannot be left unattended. It’s not just the children sleep deprivation has a devastating effect on the whole household. It affects the

health of the parents and how well they look after all their children. It is often the cause of family break-up where children end up in care. There is little night-time respite care available. The Solution

Sleep problems can be effectively treated using specially adapted behavioural and cognitive techniques. This reduces stress levels for the parents which in turn leads to improved health and quality of care for the whole family. Parents and carers can look after their children better, and make the best decisions about care for their children with additional support needs. The Way Forward

Our aim is to work in partnership with Local Authorities and Health Trusts to establish locally controlled services. Sleep Scotland’s vision is to establish sleep counselling as part of a package offered to families with children with additional support needs. Sound Sleep

Sound Sleep is an education programme that raises teenagers' awareness of the importance of sleep for their health and wellbeing, and helps them implement positive sleep habits in their routines. Developed by Sleep Scotland and launched in 2011 throughout the UK, Sound Sleep consists of a training day and teaching pack for secondary school professionals.

Fun Fact Friday!

🥱Did you know that a good night sleep can support health eating? Poor sleep can mess with the hormones that control hunger (ghrelin), and make you more likely to reach for sugary or carb-heavy snacks.

💤By resting well you can make healthier food choices.

⚽️ World Cup fever is here, but those late (and early!) kick-offs can take it out of you!

Stay on top form with our sleep tips:
⏱️ Power nap smart: 20–30 mins in the day can help beat fatigue
🍻 Having drinks? Absolutely fine - but while alcohol is a sedative it can disrupt sleep and have you up in the night
☕ Watch caffeine & sugar: great for a pick-me-up, but they linger in our system (caffeine up to 8 hours, sugar 2-3 hours), so time them wisely
📵 Post-match buzz is real - ease off the screens to help your brain switch off and get ready for sleep!

Enjoy every minute of the 2026 World Cup. It’s only here every four years and your normal routine will be back soon enough!

🌍Heading abroad to the World Cup?

⚽With games across multiple countries and time zones, keep yourself match-ready with our tips:

✈️ Start your travel well rested – the excitement’s real, but starting tired (or hungover!) makes jet lag harder to shake
⌚Change your watch to your destination’s time zone as you take off to get your brain used to the new time
💤Factor in a power nap – strictly 20 minutes, then aim for your usual bedtime
⏰ Set an alarm – avoid accidentally sleeping through the whole day!

🥱Did you know that the ideal nap time is no more than 20 minutes?

Any longer, and you risk waking up groggy instead of refreshed. Make sure naps finish before 2pm so they don’t interfere with bedtime. Older children or teens should avoid napping, but if they really need one, keep it under 20 minutes.

It’s Scottish Breastfeeding Awareness Week!

🤱Did you know that breastfeeding can improve sleep? One reason is because many hormones are released, such as melatonin, which is naturally released into a mother’s breastmilk. This can help mum and baby relax and fall asleep (or get back to sleep) easier.

👏It’s Carers Week from 8th – 14th June! Thank you to all the unpaid carers across the country.

It’s so important to celebrate and acknowledge the vital contributions of unpaid carers and raise awareness about the challenges they face. This year’s theme is “Building Carer Friendly Communities.”

Caring roles vary greatly and in the Sleep Action community we help over 700 families every year who are struggling with sleep issues. Whether your child has additional support needs or is typically developing, our service is here to help.
