Across Scotland, first-day photographs have filled our feeds: new uniforms, oversized schoolbags and proud smiles. But nowhere is it shown the tears, their little hands not letting go of our hands. The hesitation, the panic in their voice.
We often talk about whether children are “school-ready”. Perhaps we should also ask whether our systems are ready to meet children as they are - not only the confident ones, but the quiet ones, the overwhelmed ones and those who need more time to trust.
This is not about blaming teachers, who are welcoming whole classes of children with different needs. It is about recognising that secure relationships are not an obstacle to independence. They are how independence grows.
At Work+Play Hub, we believe the integrity of a child’s experience matters. Transitions should not demand that children hide their distress, or that parents silence their instincts. Our children will let go and eventually enter the classroom happilly; but they should not have to feel pushed away before they are ready to step forward.
Sometimes the bravest beginning is not a clean goodbye. It is being given enough safety, patience and connection to try again tomorrow.
