Stevie Rhind
15 September 1974 – 27 September 2026
It is with a very heavy heart that we share the news that our friend and former Totally Sound colleague, Stevie Rhind, has passed away.
Stevie was one of the original members of the Totally Sound team, joining us right back at the beginning in 2003 and remaining part of the project until 2021. For almost two decades, he played a huge part in making Totally Sound the place it became for generations of young musicians in Edinburgh.
A fantastic drummer and musician, Stevie had a real ability to connect with young people. He was funny, with a wonderfully dry sense of humour, and had a natural way of working alongside young musicians that allowed him to build strong relationships with them. For many, he became much more than simply a tutor or member of staff – he was a mentor and someone who encouraged them to develop their own music and creativity.
Recording was a big part of Stevie’s work at Totally Sound. He spent countless hours in the studio working with young bands and individual musicians, helping them develop their ideas and turn them into recordings they could be proud of. He brought a great deal of skill and musical knowledge to that work, but just as importantly, he was genuinely engaged and passionate about helping young people make their own music. Over the years he facilitated a huge number of recordings, from first demos and young bands finding their feet through to the many larger Totally Sound recording projects that brought everyone together.
Alongside his work at Totally Sound, Stevie also worked with the Instrumental Music Service, teaching percussion in high schools across Edinburgh. There will be many former pupils across the city who learned their first drum beat, developed their playing or discovered a love of making music with Stevie’s help.
For those of us who worked alongside him, the memories are just as much about the person as the musician. Many of us played in bands with Stevie, shared stages and rehearsal rooms with him, worked alongside him for years and spent countless hours laughing with him. His dry humour, musicianship and friendship were a big part of our lives and of Totally Sound.
It also feels slightly wrong to write something about Stevie that is entirely solemn. Anyone who knew him well will know that he would almost certainly have found something in all of this to make a very dry – and quite possibly inappropriate – joke about.
Our thoughts and love are with Stevie’s family, friends, former pupils and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him, working with him or making music with him over the years.
This is a really hard loss for the Totally Sound family.
🥁❤️ Stevie will be very fondly remembered and very much missed. ❤️🥁
