Spreading the love 🫶🏽and visibility lastly where it all began, our BTW founder Libby King.✨
Why did she set up BTW 6 years ago;
I suffered lots of discrimination and indirect homophobia from the health care services on my journey to Parenthood.
I had to pretend I was heterosexual to get fertility tests through the NHS. After finally finding out I was fertile I had to go through a private clinic to look at my treatment options. Having to have to pay for fertility tests again, these tests contradicted what the NHS said & came back that I had a small amount of eggs and would unlikely fall pregnant with IUI and they recommended IVF. Which costs up to £10,000.

I took my fertility into my own hands and decided against IVF and opted for IUI. I got myself super fit and healthy by not drinking alcohol and going to the gym on a regular basis eating clean & manifesting my pregnancy. Through my isolating journey to parenthood I decided I didn’t want anyone else to feel ALONE so I created Bournethisway which is an LGBTQ+ parents support group that helps enhance people’s overall health , underpinning the 5 steps to wellbeing. We offer regular family meet ups such as swimming, farm visits, parks meets, soft-play as well as more individually tailored support like counselling, coaching PT sessions & much more. We meet in Eastbourne & surrounding areas.

With some more sparkle and magic ✨ it’s our Lauren & she supports BTW because;
It’s a lovely group for families of lgbtq+ families. BTW provides a variety of support from youth support, school talks, to support for lgbtq+ families trying to start a family. They provide a safe space for families to meet and connect. It’s great for children to be able to meet other families that have a make up similar to their own. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I volunteer with BTW because I love the community that has been created and what it represents. It’s also a great opportunity for my family unit to meet others both the same and different 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Keeping the light ✨shining on our BTW committee members it’s our Leah & this is why she volunteers;
After supporting my wife through a really difficult pregnancy journey, becoming a parent came with moments where I felt like I had to explain my role or connection to our child, and BTW gave me a safe space where I never felt that pressure. It brought such a sense of calm and belonging at a time when I really needed it.

I now support BTW through awareness training, promotional events and radio interviews because I’m passionate about helping people better understand and support LGBTQ+ families. I know how important it is for parents to feel seen, welcomed and understood, and I’m really proud to be part of that work. The best thing has been watching our child grow up surrounded by other same-sex parents and single parents from our community. He has been introduced to such a wonderfully diverse mix of families and seeing that representation and normalising all different kinds of families from such a young age has meant so much to us.🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
