Menschliche Schutzschilde:

Open Letter: Support of Motion to Mark Palestine Independence Day by Flag Flying in Weymouth.

We write on behalf of Dorset Palestine Solidarity Campaign (DPSC) in support of the motion proposed by Councillors to fly the Palestinian flag, marking Palestine Independence Day.

This is a modest but meaningful act of solidarity with Palestinians reflecting the UK government’s formal recognition of the State of Palestine, and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. The government has rightly gone further and instituted sanctions against the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank and violence by illegal settlers.

According to UNICEF, 71,803 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including 21,500 children; approximately 44,500 children have been injured. Some 340 children have been killed since the October 2025 ceasefire. These figures represent families and communities that have been destroyed. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, stating there are reasonable grounds to believe both men bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza. Humanitarian compassion and principle demands a response.

While councillors may have differing views on particular issues, to fly the Palestinian flag on Palestinian Independence Day is an elementary gesture confirming the British publics support for the state of Palestine, and for the innocent victims, in the face of such wholesale destruction of a society, and to support Palestinians’ right to dignity and self-determination.

In a YouGov poll of July of this year, only 17% of the British public do not believe Israel’s action in Gaza constitutes genocide. A majority of Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green voters agree that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide [67%, 66% and 65% respectively with no more than 10% of these parties’ voters taking an opposing view]. More Conservative voters also agree with that position than disagree.

As a local campaign with many supporters from all faiths and none, we reject the objections from right wing nationalist groups that solidarity with those who suffer under occupation and mass violence is not our concern. We believe this to be an expression of anti-Palestinian racism and indeed wider racist views. They should not be reinforced. Weymouth Town Council expresses remembrance and solidarity through its published 2026 schedule, including flying the Ukrainian flag on Ukrainian Independence Day and flags marking Holocaust Memorial Day, Armed Forces Weekend, Pride, United Nations Day, White Ribbon Day and Human Rights Day. The government decision to recognise the state of Palestine was taken after publication of the 2026 schedule. However, the compassion rightly shown to the people of Ukraine should also apply to the people of Palestine.

We therefore urge members of the Environment and Services Committee to support the motion and approve the flying of the Palestinian flag on Palestinian Independence Day, 15 November 2026.

Macklemore has yet again shown us again that words are cheap but action is invaluable.

Well done to the support bands that followed in taking their stance.

This serves as a reminder of our own BCP Council and Dorset Council inaction. Still investing £173000000 in genocide and human rights violations.

They keep kicking the can down the road as our pension fund comes under more risk while thousands are still being murdered and ethnically cleansed.

We will be going back to demand divestment
