Children on the Edge is a child rights organisation that works hand-in-hand with communities to support some of the world’s most marginalised children, in some of the toughest situations. We work to create conditions in which every marginalised child can flourish and thrive no matter where

they live and irrespective of the challenging circumstances they face. We place children at the heart of everything we do by working hand-in-hand with local communities to restore hope, dignity, and justice; and to actively involve everyone in creating transformation.

We're so excited to be taking our Cluster Learning Model to Karamoja!

The first thing we need is teachers; so our team just wrapped up three weeks of practical teacher training.

To help local trainees master play-based learning, we got them straight into hands-on workshops and role-play. Together, they covered:

- Exploring real classroom scenarios, learning to support struggling students and guide groups on sharing and resolving conflict

- How learning through play drives development, and how to create teaching resources from scratch

- Different techniques to extend learning and enrich lessons.

The team told us there was brilliant energy from the whole group and the teachers are looking forward to putting their new practical skills into action.

"When I learned to read and write in my mother tongue, it felt like I was holding a piece of my home again."

Literacy is a fundamental human right. In Kutupalong refugee camp, we are supporting Rohingya communities to read and write in their own mother tongue language.

Children in our classrooms are taught by trained refugee teachers and they learn using Rohingya language textbooks and translated videos. So they are able to fully understand their lessons and earlier this year, we launched the Rohingya Zoban mobile app, enabling anyone with a smartphone to independently learn to read and write using the Rohingya alphabet.

As student Nur Kabir says, learning to read and write in his own language extends much further than the classroom, it gives his community the tools to speak up for themselves and ensure their culture and history isn't lost.

"Back in Myanmar, we lost everything and even our language felt like it was slipping away into fear. But when I learned to read and write in my mother tongue, it felt like I was holding a piece of my home again. Now, I write down everything my family says, so we never forget who we are."

The 25th August 2017 marked the beginning of a devastating chapter when more than 754,000 Rohingya people were forced from their homes by extreme violence and persecution in Myanmar.

Nine years since the genocide, over a million Rohingya families still reside in Kutupalong, the world's largest refugee camp in Bangladesh, with no safe option to return home. Today, our thoughts are with the entire Rohingya community. We honour their strength, dignity, and hope as they endure ongoing uncertainty and work to preserve their culture, language, and identity against the odds.

We stand in solidarity with the Rohingya people today and every day.

In Kyaka II refugee settlement in Uganda, the teachers make the most of the free natural materials around them to create resources for play-based learning. Here the teacher has made a circle from banana fibres but it has become much more than just a shape. With a simple resource the teacher has opened up endless opportunities for games, interactive learning, and imaginative play.

We had a brilliant day at Chichester's Emergency Services and community day on Sunday.

We loved meeting so many people, sharing some of the simple materials we use for play-based learning in Uganda, and seeing lots of friendly competition on our tin can alley.

Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped us on the stall and to Continue Arcades Chichester and FlipOut who donated some fantastic prizes.

We have officially launched a new Rohingya Language Learning App in the world’s largest refugee camp. 📱

The interactive app, developed by digital innovator Muhammad Noor, is designed to help children and adults learn the Rohingya script. Using colourful pictures and voice pronunciations, it allows beginners of all ages to learn at their own pace from a smartphone.

After receiving permission from local authorities posters with QR codes to download the app were put up throughout the camp. The response has been immediate with over 5,000 app downloads within weeks of the launch.
