Children on the Edge is a child rights organisation that works hand-in-hand with communities to support some of the world’s most marginalised children, in some of the toughest situations. We envision a world in which every child thrives regardless of their geography, ethnicity, gender, or caste. We work to create conditions in which every marginalised child can flourish and thrive no matter where they live and irrespective of the challenging circumstances they face. We place children at the heart of everything we do by working hand-in-hand with local communities to restore hope, dignity, and justice; and to actively involve everyone in creating transformation.

Great photos of the week from Karamoja Uganda, where the newly enrolled children at our cluster groups were enjoying free-play early learning.

You can see here how they all worked together to build a house out of bottles, and then went to sleep in it! 🥹

Cluster groups are brand new in Karamoja, replicated recently from Kyaka II refugee settlement, and we love that they are already having an impact.

When Child Protection Team member Santina built a latrine near her home in Karamoja, she didn't expect the change that followed. Her neighbours so were inspired to follow her lead that 28 latrines were built in their village, helping to eradicate cases of diarrhoea and dysentery.

Back in March, early childhood teacher Judith delivered training about cognitive development and using active interactions to deepen learning to the teacher trainers in Kyaka II.

Reassessing the impact in September, our Head of Education and Learning, Debra Laxton was thrilled to see the teacher trainers put their learning straight into practice.

Our photos of the week are from a recent training session where teacher trainers, Richard and Safari were in action, cascading their knowledge about cognitive development and using active interactions to deepen learning to the cluster teachers. 📷

Philip and Elizabeth were among the first families supported by Child Protection Teams in Karamoja, to start growing their own food. With training and seeds, their garden flourished, feeding their family and providing surplus produce to sell.

Since this point, extreme drought in the area has devastated all their crops. Despite these challenges, they haven't lost hope. They’ve saved their seeds and are ready to plant again.

"Every girl deserves a childhood and the power to choose her own future."

12-year-old Nivea was trafficked from her home in Karamoja and forced to beg on the streets in Uganda's capital. After surviving life on the streets of Kampala, she returned home determined to make a difference. Today, she is a role model for her friends as a member of her Child Rights Club. Together they work hard to make their village safer for every child who lives there.

In Karamoja, over 50% of girls are married before turning 18, the highest rate in the country. Nivea and the Child Rights Club want to change this, campaigning to protect children from trafficking, abuse, and child marriage.

The theme of International Day of the Girl 2026 is 'End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights!' and girls like Nivea are already leading the way!

We love this moment captured in Karamoja! Here one of the newly trained teachers is supporting the children to use different objects for pretend play. The children had created an aeroplane using bottle tops. The teacher then extended learning by introducing a doll 'pilot' which led to lots of discussions and imaginative play.
