This summer at Durham Cricket Foundation's programmes across the North East:⁣

🫶530 young people attended 25 free summer courses⁣
🫶48 unique participants joined our free SEND summer camps⁣
🫶521 young people took part in camps at Banks Homes Riverside⁣
🫶200+ women played across 37 teams from 26 clubs at MegaFest⁣
⁣

Following the success of last year’s SEND Player Pathway programme provided by Durham Cricket Foundation, we are looking for the next group of talented SEND cricketers to join us!

Our SEND Player Pathway is designed to support players who are ready to develop their skills, build confidence and take part in more competitive cricket in a fun and supportive environment.

This year we have delivered 57 festivals for schools, giving thousands of young people the chance to compete.

Alongside delivering programmes in 242 schools, our festivals take that work further, bringing young people into competition and creating pathways into the game.

🏏 7 KS1 festivals, reaching 1,850 children

🏏 22 Year 3/4 festivals

🏏 28 Year 5/6 festivals – including 12 girls’ festivals, reaching 570 girls

From first experiences of competition to representing their school, these festivals give young people more opportunities to play, develop and stay connected to cricket.

This work has been made possible through our partnership with Chance to Shine, as well as the brilliant support of our schools, South Tyneside School Sport Network, Young Leaders and coaches.

Durham Cricket Foundation is very proud to have built such a wonderful new street cricket hub in Middlesbrough, our Inclusion Officer Shahzana Aslam had connected so well with the community there, breaking down all barriers, with intention and dedication to find a space that is large enough for this group of 80 children to enjoy cricket every Sunday.

This month we have celebrated this success with Al Madina Mosque being recognised for the Connecting Communities category in this year’s Grassroots Cricket Awards.

🏏 Chance to Shine’s Street cricket clubs are aimed at engaging young people across the country living in under-served communities.

Usually running after school or on weekends, the clubs are completely free for participants and offer those involved the chance to develop their cricketing skills as well as life and social skills.

Stockton Street Cricket Club, in Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, was formed in 2025 after Shahzana Aslam was contacted by a local mosque that wanted to set up a sports club.

"I would say 30 percent of them [the participants] had never heard of cricket before, but their parents wanted them to get involved.

"I thought that girls couldn’t play cricket. But Shahzana proved to me that they can.

"I’ve learnt how to be patient, encouraging and communicative, so everyone’s involved.

On Aslam, Mick Armstrong, Durham Cricket Foundation’s operations manager, said: "She’s really made links with the community and found the right people in the community, so parents see what we offer. She’s broken down those barriers of confidence and trust...

🌟 Chance to Shine’s Street cricket clubs are bringing cricket to young people in areas where it otherwise might not be accessible.

Last week Durham Cricket Foundation teamed up with Karbon Homes to deliver a SEND Friendly Cricket Camp at Croft Community School, which included a packed lunch.

The event was another great step in our long-standing partnership with Karbon, helping us create more opportunities for children and young people to enjoy cricket.

This camp was one of six free SEND cricket camps delivered by Durham Cricket Foundation across the region this summer, making it easier for more young people to get involved, try something new and enjoy the game. 🏏
