Hill Pony Resources

Hill Pony Resources Helping Hill Ponies get the future they deserve. Registered Charity 1188454 The ponies are part of Dartmoor itself. Thank you for reading

Dartmoor Hill Ponies are so versatile - they are able to survive out on the moor in extreme weather - they are used to keep the moor in the present condition by their grazing habits. Although they live wild they are actually owned by the farmers that run their animals on the common land. Each year they are drifted in to the farms and the foals are either taken to market to sell, found private home

s, taken in by charities or sadly PTS and their meat used for Zoos and human consumption. We believe that the ponies on Dartmoor could be better managed and one way would be to remove stallions in an attempt to manage the indiscriminate breeding

To try and help we have run castration clinics whereby the colts return to the moor as geldings where they will help reduce the number of foals born every year. We also have taken in/rehomed over 120 ponies in the past 10 years of running . We also help owners whose circumstances have changed and can no longer keep their ponies by helping to find them new homes

Where possible we aim to find suitable Adoption homes for the ponies. We currently have ponies with us who are available for Adoption and also long stay ponies that cannot be rehomed

Hill Pony Resources is a Registered Charity 1188454. We are self funded and rely solely on fundraising in order to provide for the ponies needs which include field rent, hay/haylage, feed, bedding, Vet and farrier visits, and wormers

If you would like to help us you could either share our page to help us find suitable homes, make a donation via paypalme/helphillponies - or please contact for our bank detail or address for cheques to help us care for the ponies in our care

Or visit our Amazon Wish List (search Hill Pony Resources) or donate at Pet and Pony Yelverton towards our feed bill. (01822 854050)

Or please contact if you would like to volunteer with us.

Sharing this because there is a lot of misinformation concerning Dartmoor Hill Ponies on the socials at the moment. People4ponies summary makes sense. It is also worth visiting Natural England FB for their statement

A busy few days preparing for pony returners here. Including reinforcing fencing (!) , borrowing Hera's panels (thanks Angela) ensuring we have enough forage & bedding. And last night Buck & Paddington left for a little holiday in a foster home and a huge thank you for this. It is a little quiet at the yard at the moment without this little pair but they are not too far away and being very well looked after! The quiet yard won't last long either.............

Sadly Cola has not taken a liking to ridden work post her stifle surgery earlier this year. And so we would like to find her a suitable companion home moving forward. If we had less ponies with us (and pending returning to us ! ) We would love for her to return while she looked for a home and in the meantime she would be a great asset for visitor and volunteer cuddles ! However space is limited.

Cola will stand for hours to be groomed and is very used to children - she has even taken part in educational activities and pony parties at her current home.

These are the requirements for Cola's new home :

Companion Only

A grass free environment - As she has had laminitis in the past
She would need equine company but can be left alone for short periods (will whinny)
A home to keep her active she likes to go for walks, ground work in school, agility work

A home that will provide love and fuss for this lovely pony who deserves it!

Home would be in the South West only

Please see our pinned post for details of how to apply for this very special mare

Recent reporting on Natural England's role and position on Dartmoor ponies has contained several inaccuracies, including that Natural England has recommended a cull of Dartmoor ponies, which is false. We have also seen similar reporting on Exmoor ponies, which is …
