BEATING THE BOUNDS IS BACK!
Here is your chance to take part in this ancient, quirky tradition.
Join us for a scenic 5 mile walk around the boundaries of Saltash. Learn about the history of Moditonham Quay, see the tomb of a cruisader knight and the original village stocks in Botus Fleming. 🚶🏻♀️🚶
After a stop for a cuppa in St Mary’s church, ☕️🍪 we will continue to other boundary stones until we reach Notter Bridge. After a quick pint in the pub, 🍺🍷we will all be collected by buses and taken to St Germans station where we will catch the train (along the Saltash river boundary) to Saltash. The day finishes with a cream tea at the station.

So, what is Beating the Bounds I hear you say 🤔
Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom which is still observed in some English and Welsh parishes in England. The custom dates from Anglo-Saxon times, as it is mentioned in laws of Alfred the Great. It was often followed by an ale feast which guaranteed its popularity. 🍻
A group of old and young members of the community would walk the boundaries of the parish, usually led by the parish priest, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands (a celebration of our town you could say)
There are records of Saltash Beating the Bounds in 1871 and in 1890. It was the custom for both the Mayor and Town Clerk to be bumped on the first and last boundary stone. We have now added the tradition of the Town Crier at the first and last stone, where he will make a cry in honour of our wonderful town, Saltash. 🔔
It’ll be a day to remember ☺️
The Town Council Risk Assessment is available at www.saltash.gov.uk and on the Fore Street noticeboard. It is your responsibility to review the Risk Assessment prior to attending the event. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
