Carol Watson, said working in the shop had made her feel more connected after the Covid pandemic.
“I’ve been really impressed by everyone’s willingness, commitment and flexibility. It helps having a committed and flexible committee behind us. Nothing we do is wrong or a crisis or a problem. It’s treated as a learning curve. I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with people I haven’t spoken to for a while. The till does most of the maths but it has also helped with my mental arithmetic skills!” she said.

“I feel absolutely passionate about community, and Tamar Valley Pantry is a perfect example of a community coming together to provide a vital local service,” she said.

Michelle Turner, is also a regular volunteer.
“I enjoy socialising and problem solving. It’s about using your brain and having something to get up for in the mornings. You feel really useful working in the shop and it’s great fun. You can meet people and help them and make time to talk to them. And at the end of the day, who doesn’t like to play shop?” she said.

Lindsey Sharp, a volunteer, said: “It is rewarding to give something back to the community and to feel part of a friendly team. I personally enjoy meeting new people and chatting to staff and customers. You learn a lot about your local community and we even have visitors from abroad from time to time. When you are working in the shop it is also very convenient to pick up groceries that you need yourself and it saves having to go to the supermarket so much. I can recommend being a volunteer as a very worthwhile activity.”

Gavin Short, a staff volunteer, said:
“After a full career at sea and abroad I took early retirement and became a volunteer. The pleasure is in meeting new people. When the Harrowbarrow Village shop and Post Office announced its closure, it seemed a natural development for my family to get involved in the planning and fundraising for the Community Shop.”
