Project MAMA

Project MAMA Project MAMA support women who are refugees, seeking asylum or have irregular immigration status throughout pregnancy, childbirth and in early parenting.

Project MAMA is a registered charity based in Bristol launched in March 2018 that offers free, confidential and individual-focused holistic support to women throughout pregnancy, labour and childbirth, and those first few weeks of parenthood. We currently support pregnant refugees, asylum-seekers, survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking and other displaced women. We focus on this demogra

phic because of the extreme difficulty women can have accessing the NHS, the language barriers they face and the extreme social isolation they may experience. Project MAMA is a hive of midwives, activists, doulas and birth companions who form a peer network of skills, support and solidarity for women and their children. Our ethos is to encourage independence and bolster natural resilience women have by providing a safe and nurturing space to unpack ideas and wishes around birth & support in early motherhood. We are a sisterhood network, promoting a women’s right to choose and we facilitate community. We promote an understanding of a woman’s rights and entitlements surrounding maternity healthcare in these challenging times.

The Project MAMA team has been taking part in the Black Maternity Matters 6-month training programme, and it’s been incredibly powerful.

In the UK, Black women are over twice as likely to die during pregnancy or the postnatal period than White women. Stillbirth rates of Black babies are also over twice those for White babies. The programme brings together professionals, working across perinatal services, to reflect, learn and take action to address these stark inequalities.

For our team, it’s been a space to listen, reflect and challenge our thinking. It has strengthened how we embed anti-racism at Project MAMA and advocate for more equitable maternity care for the mamas we stand alongside.

A huge thank you to the team for creating such an important and brave space for learning and change 🧡

The amazing women who make up the Project MAMA village remind us every day that hope happens here 🧡

We are so grateful for the dedicated staff team behind our work, the volunteers who give their time and expertise so generously, the organisations we are proud to partner with, and most of all the mamas we have the privilege of standing alongside.

Hope lives in community, solidarity and showing up for one another, especially during difficult times.

We know that last week’s elections have left many in our community feeling frightened and uncertain.

Don’t give up hope. Together, we are stronger, and love will always be louder than hate.

In solidarity,
The Project MAMA Team

Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating 🌙

We know that this year many people have observed Ramadan while living through forced displacement.

At Project MAMA, we’re holding close the families in our community and around the world who are marking this time in difficult circumstances or far from their loved ones. We stand with you and wish you a peaceful Eid 🧡

At Project MAMA, we’re in awe of the strength and love that the parents we walk alongside show every day.

Many women in our community are navigating pregnancy and raising little ones while rebuilding their lives in a new place and language. Their courage and determination to create a safe future for their families is inspiring.

This , stand in solidarity with displaced mamas by becoming a monthly supporter.

Last month, Baroness Amos published the interim findings from her review into maternity and neonatal services in England.

The report reinforces what families and community organisations have long been saying: maternity care is not experienced equally.

Black and Asian women, families living in deprived areas, and parents facing language barriers or insecure immigration status are more likely to experience poor outcomes.

The review recognises that for some women, maternity services feel like a system that is “not for them”.

This is why Project MAMA exists.

We walk alongside mamas who face deep disparities on their journeys from pregnancy to parenthood. We advocate for equitable and compassionate care grounded in culturally sensitive, trauma-informed and language accessible practice.

Thank you for standing with us and being part of the movement 🧡

People seeking sanctuary deserve security and support, not more uncertainty.

The government has announced that, from this week, refugee status will be temporary.

Every 30 months, people’s protection will be reviewed, trapping those who have survived extreme trauma in a cycle of instability. Individuals and families who come to the UK to find safety and rebuild their lives will instead face ongoing insecurity about their future.

At Project MAMA, we see every day how the hostile environment impacts parents and children. When mamas are living with chronic stress and instability, it directly affects their wellbeing, birth experiences and early bonding with their babes.

We call on the government to choose policies that protect families, not destabilise them.

To our community, we stand with you.

Nobody is illegal. You belong here 🧡
