TLDR: Please email/tweet the relevant council leaders telling them not to block it!
Dear all
One of our 10 key asks of Metro Mayor candidates during last spring’s election campaign was that they should call on the local government pension scheme to divest from fossil fuels.
Metro mayor Dan Norris now proposes to do just that. He is putting a motion to the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) meeting this coming Friday, 1 July, calling on the scheme to “divest entirely from fossil fuel stocks” and commit to 2030 carbon neutrality.
The motion will be voted on by Dan Norris and the three leaders of the councils in the WECA area – Marvin Rees, Kevin Guy and Toby Savage. From this press report (https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/metro-mayor-demands-local-government-7266926), it looks as though the motion will run into trouble, with speakers for these councils making excuses on behalf of the fossil fuel industries and sharing their disinformation.
This excellent thread from UK Divest exposes the reality behind the claims. Oil and gas companies are still putting the overwhelming majority of their capital spending towards fossil fuels - just 5% of their investment is in clean energy: https://twitter.com/UKDivest/status/1542106939416526848?t=K8clXweJkX3YnlXPflM98A&s=19
If you have a moment before Friday, please can you help persuade council leaders not to block Metro Mayor Dan Norris’ divestment motion?
You could write to them directly, or contact them on social media sharing the UK Divest twitter thread. Their twitter handles are
And if you feel super-inspired there is still time to submit a public statement to the WECA meeting, so long as it is received by 12 noon on Thursday 30 June 2022. Statements should be emailed to [email protected]
