SIDE ROOM: suitable for committees, groups, smaller children's parties.. £10.00 per hour

Main hall and side room have separate toilet and kitchen, and heating facilities. Full size pool table, table tennis, table football, other games available. Ideal venue for children's play, dance, drama, sporting activities or children's parties, weddings, wakes and conferences. We are not licensed for the sale of alcohol, but hirers can obtain a one-off licence or, more simply, organise 'bring your own'. FREE Wi-Fi for centre users. OUTSIDE: Large, secure, play area for under fives. Adjoining COMMUNITY GARDEN

Covid compliant

Current regular users include Slimming World, Playgroup, Line Dancing, Wood Turners, Jazz Band, Meet and Play 0-4 years social group, dog training, fitness class, keyboard lessons, various committees, councillor surgeries, PCSOs.

Many of you may have started your educational journey at West Ward in our lovely little playgroup, which has been running for over 50 years !

The board of trustees have been made aware of a post on a local hub regarding a recent interaction between a member of the public and a private hirer at the centre.

Having taken professional advisement, we would seek to address some of the points raised in that post and set out our position.

The centre is not “open to the public” - West Ward is neither a council owned or operated centre; WWCC is available to the public to hire and is accessible to the public either for participation in groups / classes, activities or events.
It would be incredible to be able to have the centre always ‘open for the public’ but sadly as an independent, unpaid volunteer run building this is simply unachievable without more volunteers and funding.

In line with the safeguarding policy held by WWCC, the centre would recommend that no unaccompanied minor; who is not already a registered participant of a group should be in the building when a members only activity is taking place. Not only does this pose a potential safeguarding risk to that child and also group members, there is also the question of liability in case of fire/ accident or incident and insurance considerations.

However, each private hirer of the centre has their own individual policies and they are solely responsible for how they choose to conduct themselves during their hire sessions.

We understand this is a very contentious issue, sadly in this day and age of allegations and litigations, we must seek to protect the centre, our unpaid volunteers and the groups that hire the centre as well as do our best to safeguard minors in our community.

Our volunteer board have taken steps to investigate the recent situation by speaking to the leader of the private hire group and are satisfied by their response.

The centre will issue no more statements about this incident, but we would like to invite the original poster to contact us via email if they so wish and to meet with the board if they feel it would be helpful to discuss the matter further.
