Don’t forget to head to the centre today (Saturday 3rd October) for the Lions autumn book sale !! Open from 9am…

A great time to stock up on your reads for winter !

How about creating a book advent for December ? Healthier than chocolate - gather books at bargain prices; wrap each one individually in paper, label them with numbers from 1 to 24, and unwrap one each day in December… great for kids and adults - and the Lions have all genres of books on sale!

Or follow the delightful Icelandic tradition of “Jólabókaflóð” (which translates to the Christmas Book Flood) The idea is that books are wrapped and placed under the tree. Then, on Christmas Eve the books are exchanged and a restful evening spent reading !

Colour coordinate your purchases and use your books as decor to suit the seasons!

So many different reasons to visit the book fair today !!

Hope to see you later !

The board of trustees have been made aware of a post on a local hub regarding a recent interaction between a member of the public and a private hirer at the centre.

Having taken professional advisement, we would seek to address some of the points raised in that post and set out our position.

The centre is not “open to the public” - West Ward is neither a council owned or operated centre; WWCC is available to the public to hire and is accessible to the public either for participation in groups / classes, activities or events.
It would be incredible to be able to have the centre always ‘open for the public’ but sadly as an independent, unpaid volunteer run building this is simply unachievable without more volunteers and funding.

In line with the safeguarding policy held by WWCC, the centre would recommend that no unaccompanied minor; who is not already a registered participant of a group should be in the building when a members only activity is taking place. Not only does this pose a potential safeguarding risk to that child and also group members, there is also the question of liability in case of fire/ accident or incident and insurance considerations.

However, each private hirer of the centre has their own individual policies and they are solely responsible for how they choose to conduct themselves during their hire sessions.

We understand this is a very contentious issue, sadly in this day and age of allegations and litigations, we must seek to protect the centre, our unpaid volunteers and the groups that hire the centre as well as do our best to safeguard minors in our community.

Our volunteer board have taken steps to investigate the recent situation by speaking to the leader of the private hire group and are satisfied by their response.

The centre will issue no more statements about this incident, but we would like to invite the original poster to contact us via email if they so wish and to meet with the board if they feel it would be helpful to discuss the matter further.
Email: [email protected]
We would also welcome contact from anyone who would like to volunteer at the centre.

Many thanks to the members of our community for your ongoing support.
