An incredible honour for Blyth Lifeboat Station! ⚓️🌊

A few Sundays ago, representatives from Blyth had the immense privilege of attending the Annual National Service for Seafarers held at the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Organised by The Seafarers’ Charity, this historic annual service brings together the maritime community to give thanks for all who live and work upon the waters.

In special recognition of our station’s 200th anniversary this year, Blyth was invited by RNLI Chief Executive Peter Sparkes to represent the RNLI as part of the official colour party.

Crew member Adam Shepherd carried out the duties of standard bearer, accompanied by Anna Heslop-Latif and Geoff Cowan from our flank station, Cullercoats RNLI

Carrying the RNLI standard beneath the dome of St Paul’s during our bicentenary year is a moment our station will treasure for years to come. A huge thank you to everyone who made this trip possible, and to our fellow crew and supporters across the coast.

👏 A big congratulations to two of our volunteer crew members, who have successfully completed their Crew Emergency Procedures (CEP) course at RNLI College in Poole! 🧡

It’s an important milestone in their training, helping them develop the skills and confidence to look after themselves and their fellow crew if an emergency happens at sea.

And this is far more than classroom learning! The practical training includes:

🌊 Capsize and recovery drills for D-class and Atlantic 85 lifeboats, learning how to respond if a lifeboat overturns and get safely back aboard.
🔥 Safe use of distress flares and firefighting equipment.
🛟 Sea survival techniques, working together in the water and getting into a life raft.
💧 Practising how to safely abandon a lifeboat in an emergency.

The college’s specialist survival pool can recreate waves, darkness, thunder and lightning, giving crews a challenging but controlled environment to put their training into practice.

Behind every lifeboat launch are hours of training, commitment and teamwork. Giving up their own time to develop these skills is another step forward for our volunteers as they continue their lifesaving journey.

Well done to you both, and thank you to the instructors at RNLI College who help prepare our crews for the challenges they may face. Join us in giving them a well-deserved congratulations! 👏

A HUGE THANK YOU TO NORTHUMBERLAND IFCA

We would like to say a massive thank you to the Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Northumberland IFCA) for their generous £1,050 donation to RNLI Blyth Lifeboat Station.

The cheque presentation took place at the recent RNLI - Amble Lifeboat Station Fete Day, where crews gathered afloat to mark the occasion.

The funds were raised through the sale of seized illegal fishing gear, with an incredible total of £14,700 distributed among local RNLI stations and the Fishermen's Mission. It is fantastic to see the proceeds of marine enforcement turned directly into vital resources to help protect our local waters and fishing communities.

Donations like this are crucial in keeping our volunteer crews trained, equipped, and ready to launch whenever the pagers sound.

From all the crew and team at RNLI Blyth — thank you for your support!

The RNLI is a charity that exists to save lives at sea. But recent events have generated deliberate misinformation and a misunderstanding about our purpose and our lifesaving work in the Channel.

As a result, some of our volunteers and staff have been the subject of online and, in some cases, physical abuse. This is unacceptable.

The RNLI’s people represent the very best of society. For over two hundred years they have dedicated themselves to rescuing people they’ve never met before, without judgment, fear or favour.

We are tasked by HM Coastguard to help those in distress, and we'll do so whenever, wherever and whoever they are.

We launched 9,058 times in 2025. Only 109 of those launches were to those in distress in the Channel – 1.2% of our total rescue work. Anyone rescued from a small boat by the RNLI is then taken into the care of the relevant UK authorities.

To those who stand with the RNLI, thank you. For more than two hundred years, we've saved lives at sea around the UK and Ireland, and that commitment remains unchanged.
