Did you know that tucked away within Blyth Tall Ship is an incredible collection helping to preserve and tell the story of Blyth’s rich maritime heritage?

And our archives aren't somewhere history simply sits in a box gathering dust. We want it to be discovered!

There are lots of ways you can get involved…

📜 VISIT US
Come and explore the collection, discover fascinating stories from Blyth's maritime past and see what treasures you can uncover.

🔎 VOLUNTEER WITH US
Fancy becoming a bit of a history detective? Our archive volunteers help us research, catalogue, digitise and preserve our collection so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

🎓 LEARN WITH US
Join one of our archive courses and learn how archives work, how we investigate historical material and how the documents, photographs and objects we preserve can help piece together the stories of the people and places that came before us.

You definitely don't need to be a historian to get involved. You just need a little curiosity… 👀

Whether you're fascinated by ships, interested in local history, looking for a new volunteering opportunity or simply love disappearing down a historical rabbit hole, there could be a place for you in the Blyth Tall Ship archives.

Every photograph identified, every document catalogued and every story researched helps us make sure an important part of Blyth's story isn't lost.

⚓ Come and help us preserve it.

⚓ 41 young people. One very special boat. And this is just the beginning…

Our Homecoming Adventure coble restoration has been about far more than bringing a traditional vessel dating back to 1943 back to life.

Throughout the project, 41 young people have worked alongside our team and experienced maritime heritage in the best way we know how, by getting stuck in!

They’ve sanded. They’ve painted. They’ve learned about the engine installation. They’ve researched the history of the vessel and helped create storyboards so that future visitors can discover the story of this remarkable little boat.

For some, it was their first experience of practical learning. For others, it was an opportunity to discover skills and abilities they didn’t realise they had.

And now we want to give even more people that opportunity. ❤️

This October, we're launching new learning opportunities at Blyth Tall Ship, including our funded NVQ programme and Future Mariners programme.

Our NVQ learning will take place two days per week, for up to 12 hours, providing the opportunity to work towards recognised qualifications while developing practical skills and experience. This programme is available for learners aged 18 years old and over.

Our youth programme, Future Mariners offers a different route into learning, with shorter sessions of around two hours alongside opportunities to take part in full-day courses such as First Aid and Health & Safety.

Both programmes build on something we see time and again at Blyth Tall Ship: people thrive when learning feels purposeful, practical and connected to the real world.

We don't simply want to preserve our maritime heritage behind glass. We want people to touch it, work with it, learn from it and become part of its next chapter.

⚓ COME AND FIND OUT MORE – 18TH SEPTEMBER

We're holding two informal drop-in sessions at our Heritage Workshop on Friday 18th September

🕙 10am–12 noon
🕐 1pm–3pm

There’s no need to register. Come along, meet our team, have a look around our workshop and talk to us about both programmes.

We know that walking into somewhere new can feel daunting, particularly if you've been away from education or training for a while. That's why these sessions are deliberately relaxed. Come for a chat, ask as many questions as you like and see the environment for yourself.

If you decide it's right for you, you can sign up on the day. If you'd rather take the information home and think about it, that's absolutely fine too.

And if you work with young people or adults who could benefit from practical learning, new skills, increased confidence and a supportive route towards their next step, please share this post with them.

Homecoming Adventure has shown us just what can happen when people are given the opportunity to learn differently.

Now we're ready for the next 41 – and many more after them. ⚓❤️

❤️⚓ BEHIND EVERY BLYTH TALL SHIP ADVENTURE IS AN INCREDIBLE TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS

When you visit our Heritage Workshop, explore our archives, join us at an event or step aboard Williams II, there is something you might not immediately see…

The extraordinary number of volunteer hours, skills, enthusiasm and cups of tea that help make it all possible! ☕❤️

Our volunteers are at the heart of Blyth Tall Ship.

They help us maintain our historic vessel, support learners in our workshop, care for and research our growing archive collection, crew Williams II, welcome visitors, support community events and share an incredible range of skills and knowledge.

Some arrive with decades of maritime or professional experience. Others come to us wanting to learn something new, meet people or simply give a little of their time to their community.

Every single one of them brings something valuable.

And the impact reaches far beyond the practical jobs that get done.

Our volunteers help us create a place where skills are passed between generations, friendships are formed, confidence grows and the maritime heritage of Blyth continues to be shared with the people who will carry it forward.

So today, we're simply taking a moment to say a very big…

THANK YOU. ❤️

To everyone who gives their time to Blyth Tall Ship – whether that's regularly, occasionally, on land or at sea we couldn't do what we do without you.

You are a huge part of the Blyth Tall Ship story. ⚓

🪚⚓ COULD YOU BUILD A BOAT IN A WEEK?

There are still a few places remaining on one of the most hands-on courses in our 2026 programme our week-long Boat Building Course, beginning Monday 21st September.

Under the guidance of experienced tutor and craftsman Martin Haigh, you’ll spend the week learning traditional woodworking and boatbuilding skills, working alongside others and watching something remarkable take shape through your own hands.

This isn't about sitting in a classroom. It's about picking up the tools, learning from an expert and experiencing the enormous satisfaction of making something for real.

And there’s an extra incentive…

🚣 At the end of the week, the completed boat will be won by one of the course participants in our prize draw!

📅 21st–25th September 2026
💷 £500 per person
📍 Blyth Tall Ship Heritage Workshop
