Through our Working on Wellbeing Project, we recently supported an individual with autism to take important steps towards achieving a career in the creative industries.
With a degree in animation and a passion for media and production, they came to the project highly motivated but lacking confidence in interviews, job applications, and navigating the labour market. Although already volunteering and undertaking occasional work, securing consistent paid employment remained a challenge.
Together, we focused on building confidence, strengthening employability skills, and exploring opportunities aligned with their interests and career goals. Support included improving their CV, preparing tailored applications, registering with employment and training platforms, and developing interview techniques through mock interviews and structured preparation sessions.
One major milestone came when they successfully completed an interview with a supply agency and received highly positive feedback on their professionalism, friendliness, and confidence — something they had previously struggled to recognise in themselves.
Alongside employability support, they also gained a further valuable experience volunteering in creative and digital projects, including supporting sessions and filming live events. These opportunities helped them build technical skills, increase social confidence, and develop professional connections within a supportive environment. 🎥✨
The project also provided wellbeing support, helping them develop strategies to manage feelings of overwhelm, improve resilience, and build confidence when facing new situations and setbacks.
Reflecting on their journey, they shared:
"I feel more confident putting myself forward for opportunities now. My mentor helped me realise the skills I already had and gave me the confidence to keep progressing towards the career I want."
Towards the end of the programme, they successfully completed an application and assessment process for a production apprenticeship opportunity, demonstrating determination, perseverance, and significant personal growth.
Upon exiting the project, they had gained stronger interview and communication skills, increased confidence in professional settings, valuable industry experience, improved resilience, and a greater understanding of how to advocate for themselves and access opportunities suited to their strengths.
👏 This journey highlights the impact personalised support through our Working on Wellbeing Project can have in helping people overcome barriers and move closer to sustainable employment and improved wellbeing.
