We welcome the decision from our newly elected, progressive Welsh Government.
Today, the Deputy First Minister and Minister for Social Justice and Equality, Sioned Williams AS/MS, announced The Bevan Foundation CEO Dr Steffan Evans as co-chair of the Government's new Cynnal Expert Group.
Steffan brings a wealth of experience in tackling child poverty, and Rhymney Valley Foodbank / Banc Bwyd Cwm Rhymni has worked closely with him and his team in developing an Anti-Poverty Strategy for Caerphilly.
Llongyfarchiadau mawr Steffan!

📢 New step towards tackling child poverty in Wales

Our CEO, Steffan Evans, will co-chair the Welsh Government’s new Cynnal Expert Group alongside Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Minister for Social Justice and Equality, Sioned Williams MS.

This marks an important move forward in developing a Welsh Child Payment, something the Bevan Foundation has long called for.

The Cynnal pilot will support 15,000 children aged 0–6 in Wales, with families receiving £10 a week – a small amount that could make a big difference to people’s lives.

Sainsbury's customer donations will be distributed by RHYMNEY VALLEY FOOD BANK, this week.

Helping people facing financial turmoil, leading to food poverty. Without the caring communities intervention, consequences could be severe, as help from government is sparse.

There has been little progress in reducing poverty in Wales over the past 20 years, with poverty rates consistently hovering around 21–22%. Currently, over 1 in 5 people in Wales (22%) live in poverty, totalling 700,000 individuals. This includes 400,000 working-age adults, 200,000 children and 100,000 pensioners living in poverty. Over the past 30 years, children have consistently faced the highest poverty rates, with pensioners currently having lower poverty rates than working-age adults, both with and without children.

As you can see, your support, however small, can collectively make a big difference! THANK YOU, ALL!

Next week’s donation will be distributed by Ty’r Fesen, helping homeless people.

Young people are being failed by the very systems meant to support them - education, health and social security.

âť— In five years, 1.25 MILLION young people could be out of work or training if no action is taken.

Sky-high rents, low incomes from wages and social security, and a lack of mental health support are pushing young people to food banks - and making it even harder for them to access work or training.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

Investing in young people is an investment in our country and a future without the need for food banks. The UK government MUST act.
