Volunteers’ Week Spotlight 💡

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible individuals who give their time, skills and passion to support the young people at Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone.

Every volunteer has their own unique story, but they all share one thing in common – a commitment to helping young people thrive. We’re proud to share some of their journeys and hear firsthand what volunteering at Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone means to them.

Let's celebrate 42 years of Volunteers' Week in the UK! 🎉

This week, we're joining organisations across the country in recognising the incredible people who give their time to make a difference in their communities. 🧡

At Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, our volunteers, Young Leaders and work experience students play a vital role in creating opportunities for young people every day.

✨ From January till now, our volunteers have contributed an amazing 1,135 hours so far across both of our sites in Blackburn & Darwen.

🙌 We now have 44 volunteers and Young Leaders supporting sessions and activities, helping young people learn, grow and thrive.

🎓 We've also welcomed over 20 work placement and work experience students this year. They have supported different areas of the Youth Zone while gaining valuable experience working with children and young people. Many have shared that they feel more confident and have developed new skills during their time with us.

Thank you to every volunteer, Young Leader and student who gives their time, energy and passion to support our young people. You help make our community stronger every day.🧡

Last week our SEND group came together dressed in their best green outfits to show support for mental health awareness. The day was filled with creativity, connection, and plenty of smiles — from hand-paint art to making colourful, healthy fruit kebabs 🍓🍌

Earlier this year we launched the first independent evaluation of its kind, Back to School: Can youth work turn the tide on school absence?, exploring the role Youth Zones play in improving school attendance.

The findings are clear: Youth Zone attendance is linked to meaningful improvements in school engagement, with unauthorised absence falling by 21% among regular attendees in 2024, and a 17% overall reduction across 2012–2024. The strongest impact is seen among severely absent and disadvantaged young people.

School absence remains one of the biggest challenges in education and this research reinforces that youth work has a real role to play in addressing it beyond the classroom.
