🌊 Summer Afloat Training! ⛵

Our Summer Afloat Season runs from April to August, and this year our cadets have spent an incredible 1,621 hours on the water! 👏

It’s a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work shown by our cadets throughout the season. Along the way, they’ve developed their skills, gained new qualifications and, best of all, had plenty of fun doing it! ⚓

A huge thank you goes to our dedicated instructors and volunteers, who generously give their time, skills and experience to make it all possible, and to Sea Cadets Crosby Boat Station for hosting us throughout the season.

And, of course, we can’t forget our drivers and supervisors, whose support helps keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

It really is a fantastic team effort to provide these opportunities for our cadets.

⚓ Well done to everyone involved — 1,621 hours is an amazing achievement and a summer to be proud of!

Today, Cadet Freddie took to the waters of the Firth of Forth to put his newly developed sailing skills into practice.

With every tack, gybe and change of course, Freddie demonstrated the confidence, resilience and courage that come from stepping outside his comfort zone and embracing new challenges.

Experiences like these are what Sea Cadets is all about, building practical skills all while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Well done, Freddie! We can’t wait to see where your sailing journey takes you next.

What an incredible achievement for our cadets at the North West Area Paddlesport Competition! 🛶🏅

After months of hard work, dedication, and commitment, our cadets returned with an impressive haul of medals from both the polo competition and a number of individual races.

Success like this doesn’t happen overnight. These cadets have trained week after week, often attending two and even three training sessions a week, continually developing their paddlesport skills and pushing themselves to improve. While they have undoubtedly enjoyed spending so much time on the water, the level of commitment required should not be underestimated.

You have done yourselves, the unit, and the district proud. Your determination and teamwork have been outstanding, and we hope you continue to build on this success and keep up the training.

A huge thank you must also go to the volunteers who made this possible. From coaching and training to transporting and supervising the cadets throughout their journey, your support has been invaluable. This achievement is very much yours as well.

Congratulations to everyone involved on a fantastic result and a memorable competition! 👏

Paddles at the ready! 🚣‍♂️🌊

Tonight our cadets had the chance to try their hand at kayak polo, combining teamwork, skill, and plenty of determination on the water.

From learning ball control to working together under pressure, everyone gave it their all and had a fantastic time.

A huge well done to all who took part and to our instructors for making it such an enjoyable session. We can’t wait to get back on the water for more!

As the sun set over our Unit HQ this evening, it felt like the perfect reflection of what had been a hugely successful community open night. 🌅

Tonight was a fantastic opportunity to showcase everything Sea Cadets has to offer, from the wide range of activities available to young people, to the dedication and enthusiasm shown by our cadets and adult volunteers.

Visitors had the chance to see first hand the skills, teamwork, confidence and opportunities that being part of Sea Cadets can bring, with demonstrations and conversations highlighting the great work that takes place within the unit week in, week out.

Most importantly, the evening inspired the next generation, with 12 young people expressing an interest in joining the unit, a brilliant result and a real testament to everyone involved.

A huge thank you to all of our cadets, volunteers, supporters and visitors who helped make the evening such a success. We’re incredibly proud of what was achieved and excited for what lies ahead.

At Birkenhead Sea Cadets, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to grow in confidence, learn new skills, make lifelong friendships and experience adventure in a safe and supportive environment.

Every week, we provide opportunities that help young people develop teamwork, leadership, resilience and self belief; skills that benefit not only the individual, but the wider community too.

As an independent, fully self funded charity (520015), we rely entirely on the generosity of supporters, local businesses, families, alumni and our community to continue delivering these life changing experiences.

Every donation, no matter the size, genuinely makes a difference to the children and young people we support.

To help show how donations are used, here are some examples of our running and activity costs based on our most recent financial accounts and current activity prices:

⚓ £15 – one month’s subs for a cadet
⚓ £42 – a weekend cadet residential course
⚓ £45 – monthly telephone & broadband
⚓ £124 – monthly travel / minibus costs
⚓ £130 – one week summer camp place
⚓ £180 – monthly unit insurances
⚓ £355 – a week offshore voyage
⚓ £472 – monthly utility costs

These figures highlight the real cost of delivering high quality, safe and meaningful experiences for local young people.

Our goal is not only to support cadets today, but to ensure the long term sustainability of Birkenhead Sea Cadets so future generations can continue to access the same opportunities for years to come. Future proofing the charity is essential if we are to continue serving our community long into the future.

We value every donation and contribution made to the unit and ensure funds are used directly for the benefit of our cadets.

If you are able to support us with either a one-off donation or an affordable regular contribution, we would be incredibly grateful.

Fantastic collaboration this Bank Holiday between Birkenhead and Sefton Units at Crosby Boat Station for a brilliant bank holiday boating day! 🌊⚓

A total of 27 cadets took part in kayaking, sailing, and power boating, collectively achieving an incredible 135 boating hours — a huge contribution towards the average target of 30 hours boating per cadet per year!

It was fantastic to see cadets developing their skills and confidence on the water, with some even achieving new qualifications during the day.

Most importantly, it was great to see teamwork in action, new friendships flourishing, and everyone supporting each other throughout the event.

Despite the heatwave, cadets continued to have fun while staying safe, well hydrated, and protected with plenty of sun cream applied ☀️💧

A huge thank you to all the instructors and supervisors from both units for giving up their time to support the day. But a special thanks to the District Training Officer and the team at for hosting us and helping make the event such a success.
