The new National Standards for Children’s and Young People’s Advocacy Services are a positive step forward for children's rights, participation and access to independent advocacy.

What a week!
Thanks to Taith our young people and team at NYAS Cymru had the incredible opportunity to visit Oslo, where we met inspiring organisations championing the rights of children and young people, shared stories and experiences, enjoyed amazing food, and explored the beauty of Norway.

We even found ourselves at the Peace Centre when this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner was announced! ✨

Most importantly, this trip created opportunities for learning, connection and new perspectives that our young people can carry with the

"It's really important to get your facts right. Truth is more important than drama."

Earlier this , we were honoured to host a very special Care Conversation focused on the play 'Attachment', and how we can represent lived experience on stage and screen in an authentic, respectful and honest way. We were joined by the play's brilliant writer Julia Cranney, for a discussion between NYAS Cymru Young Person's Advisory Group member and aspiring screenwriter, James Evans, and award-winning producer and writer Helen Simmons. A massive thank you to Julia, James and Helen for sharing their time and their experiences. 💙

📣 Tomorrow 📣 the 21st October, join us at 6:30pm for a free online webinar this . We'll be discussing the play 'Attachment' with writer Julia Cranney, and the importance of respectful, honest and authentic storytelling when lived experience is being represented on stage or screen.

Hosted by producer Helen Simmons, we'll also be joined for this conversation by James Evans, a member of NYAS’s Young Person’s Advisory Group and a Cardiff-based screenwriter. As an adopted young person, James is passionate about advocating for others and bringing untold care-experienced stories to the screen.

This is a really important new report from our friends at ECPAT UK and the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner today. Children and young people who have been trafficked should be a high priority for safeguarding and protection, but instead are too often being missed, mistreated and put at greater risk of further abuse. They should find safety and support for recovery from their traumas, and see concerted action taken against their traffickers, but today’s evidence says this is far too rare.

NYAS supports the recommendations from ECPAT UK and the Anti-Slavery Commissioner, and call on everyone to remember that these are children with a right to be treated with the utmost care and protection, not ‘illegals’ or criminals, but victims of organised abuse.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re talking about mental health advocacy - and why being heard matters. 💚

For people in mental health hospitals and secure settings, decisions about care, treatment, discharge and recovery can involve complex systems and legal processes. At NYAS, our advocates help people understand their rights, express their views and take part in decisions that affect their lives. 📣

That can mean supporting someone in a ward round, tribunal or care planning meeting. It can mean raising a safeguarding concern. And sometimes, it can help professionals see a situation from a different perspective. 💡

Between April 2025 and March 2026, NYAS supported 5,473 patients in mental health settings, including identifying and escalating safeguarding concerns and supporting people through hundreds of ward rounds, tribunals and Managers’ Hearings.

Mental health advocacy is about making sure people’s rights are understood, their voices are heard and their care reflects who they are and what they need.

We’ve joined up with Internet Matters , Molly Rose Foundation and 70 expert individuals and organisations calling on the Government to make children’s media literacy a national priority.

With ongoing curriculum reform and new plans for online safety, the new Government currently has a unique opportunity to deliver an ambitious reset of media literacy. It’s time to equip a generation of young people with the skills they need to stay safe, think critically, and thrive in a digital world.

Get this right and we can not only protect young people from online harm, but deliver on urgent priorities for economic growth, democracy and national security.

Strengthened media literacy is particularly vital in the context of the upcoming social media ban – helping to protect children wherever they spend time online, while also mitigating the unintended consequences of a ban.

We'll be joined by writer Julia Cranney to discuss her powerful play Attachment and how stories about adoption, the care system, parenthood, hope and belonging can be told with care, empathy and authenticity - including a special reading from the script.

Award-winning producer Helen Simmons will host the conversation, alongside NYAS Young Person's Advisory Group member and screenwriter James Evans, who is passionate about ensuring the voices and experiences of care-experienced young people are represented respectfully and truthfully.
