"Steph is the loveliest lady... she stuck by me no matter what." ❤️

This week, 16 year old Tyler shared his experiences of growing up in care on Sky News, and talked about the support he received from his NYAS advocate, Steph.

He spoke powerfully about the challenges he has faced, his hopes for the future, and the difference that advocacy has made in his life. His words are a powerful reminder of why independent advocacy matters. Every child and young person deserves someone who stands alongside them, and helps ensure their voice is heard when decisions are being made about their lives.

We're incredibly proud of Tyler for sharing his story so courageously, and grateful to advocates like Steph whose compassion and consistency help young people feel heard and supported. You can read more about NYAS's advocacy work here: https://www.nyas.net/about-us/what-we-do/advocacy-services/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=advocacy

Thank you Tyler, for helping shine a light on the importance of advocacy, and for inspiring positive change.

🎥 with thanks to Sky News

📣 CALL FOR EVIDENCE: Intergenerational Cycles of Care Involvement - National Inquiry 📣

Many care-experienced women and girls face social care assessments, and even infant removal, when they become parents themselves. Recent research from King's College London found that women who had been in care as children were 17x more likely to have contact with children's social care during pregnancy than women without this history.

NYAS and the Birth Companions Institute are pleased to be working with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Care Experienced Children and Young People to lead a national inquiry into the intergenerational cycle of care involvement in England.

Our aim through this inquiry is to ensure care-experienced women and girls are supported to give their own babies the very best possible start in life. Our call for written evidence is now open until the 4 September 2026. 📆

We want to hear from care-experienced women who have had contact with social care during pregnancy or early motherhood, and professionals working in or with the social care system, to know what is working, what's not working and where we should be focussing our efforts for meaningful change.

More information and the links to submit evidence, as well as detail on where to send other information and questions, can be found on our website: https://www.nyas.net/support-us/policy-and-research/breaking-the-cycle-intergenerational-care-involvement/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=appginquiry

We want to hear from as many people as possible to help end the intergenerational cycle of care involvement we too often see across the country. Thank you. 💜

NYAS are honoured to be attending Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse theatres this Friday and Saturday ahead of the evening performances of 'Attachment' - a powerful new play about parenthood, hope, adoption, and the ways that relationships can grow.❤️

The playwright, Julia Cranney, volunteers for NYAS as a brilliant independent visitor - and we are so grateful to be there this weekend to talk to theatregoers about the importance of advocacy, and amplifying the voices of care-experienced children and young people. Julia developed the play alongside adoptive families from Merseyside, and it's already had the most incredible reviews - there are still a few tickets available too at: https://everymanplayhouse.com/event/attachment/

This has been a celebration of everything that makes our volunteers so incredible here at NYAS. Thank you to all those who have shared their experiences and why they love volunteering, and to our colleagues who have spent time ahead of this week sending out thank you cards, letters, and certificates. ✉️

We’re also so pleased to have been able to send special stays to a few amazing volunteers who have gone the extra mile thanks to the ‘Room for Reward’ charity. 🎉

The lovely card card design pictured here was chosen from this year’s Volunteer Week card competition, and was designed by a young person supported by NYAS. ❤️

“We just have loads of fun – me and the young person I'm matched with have got loads in common, we’re basically the same person! It's really nice, we get to have fun every month – you build a friendship, it does take a while, but it’s definitely worth it. It gives him an opportunity to do activities that he’s never had the opportunity to do before – I think it’s opened up his life experiences as well.”

Hear the brilliant Ashleigh, NYAS Volunteer, talk about her experiences as an Independent Visitor. Since filming this video, Ashleigh has also now joined NYAS’s team as a Project Unity Support Worker! 🎉

We want to say thank you to all of our incredible volunteers, not just during National Volunteer Week, but every day, for the difference you make to the lives of care-experienced children and young people. ❤️

“If you can have a positive impact on a young person who’s had a difficult start in life, that’s a privilege really. You could be the steady rock someone needs. I feel very proud to be part of his life.”

This , we had a chat with retired police officer Polly about her experience as an Independent Visitor with NYAS. Polly talked to us about why she thinks her life experiences have made her the perfect volunteer for the young person she’s been matched with – who she now has the most amazing relationship with. ❤️

Check out what Polly had to say on our website: https://www.nyas.net/about-us/news/polly-on-volunteering/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=volunteersweek

We reached out to a few of our amazing independent visitor volunteers to hear why it is that they love volunteering with us. Each of them has been been matched with one or more care-experienced children or young people during their time volunteering with us, and together they go on brilliant days out supported by NYAS, learn from each other, and build relationships that are deeply important. 😊

Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers. You make the biggest difference. ❤️
