Environmental charity conserving and enhancing the distinctive landscape, wildlife and history of Bedfordshire's Greensand Ridge and surrounding area.

The Greensand Trust's works is centred on The Greensand Ridge in Central Bedfordshire but includes areas of Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. Working in partnership, we're engaged in all aspects of the environment from protecting and conserving wildlife, landscape and heritage to promoting, developing and enhancing new and existing access routes and high quality areas for recreation and wildlife.

This week another group of Year 8 students from Henlow Academy completed the WISE Wood programme with the Greensand Trust Education Team. WISE Wood provides a range of woodland experiences for students to improve their wellbeing; open their imagination to different opportunities; learn about sustainability and the woodland environment. Over the five sessions students meet different woodland professionals and take part in activities as varied as: woodland walk and map challenge; creating a nature table; building bird, bat and dormouse boxes; making their own artists charcoal; and marshmallow toasting at the final celebration. The project takes place at the Working Woodland Centre, Maulden Wood with a visit to a Wassledine wood to find out about coppicing and charcoal making.

Hedgerows are powerhouses for wildlife. They provide food, shelter and safe passage for native wildlife, they are practical and durable boundaries for livestock, and they form part of the literal and cultural landscape of the UK.

If you want to be like Ranger Dan, and learn how to create these stunning structures then sign up to our hedgelaying weekend on the 7th and 8th November.

It is with great sadness that we share that one of our long term volunteers, Jim Miller, has passed away. He was a beloved member of the Eastern Practical and Conservation team. Since he joined the crew he became the first port of call for the team when something was too heavy or too tricky to do. The cry of 'get Jim' would go up and he would invariably save the day.

We send our condolences to all who loved him. He shall be greatly missed.

Yesterday we hosted our annual BBQ for volunteers. This year we held the event at Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve and over 50 volunteers from across the Greensand Trust came together for good food and nice chats. The BBQ gave staff and trustees the perfect opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers for everything they do, by making sure they had full plates and glasses! We consider ourselves very lucky to work with such wonderful, skilled, capable and kind people - and we literally could not do it without them.

Join us on our final guided walk on the Greensand Ridge this year!

Join us for the last of this year's '40th anniversary' walks along the Greensand Ridge.

2026 marks the 40th anniversary of Bedfordshire's premier walking route, and to celebrate this we undertaken a series of walks to showcase the wonderful woodland, heathland and parkland of this incredible area.

Our final walk takes us through Gamlingay and surrounding parklands. It is a 7 mile circular route and you can expect a relaxed and informative ramble though some beautiful habitats and historic landscapes.

The guided walk costs £10, takes place on Sunday 27th September and can be booked here:
