At Inspero, we are proud to have volunteers who generously share their skills and experience with others.

After 23 years as Head Gardener at the Colman Estate, Patrick Hennessey retired from a rewarding horticultural career.

When he discovered Inspero’s Community Garden, it provided the perfect opportunity to continue his passion for gardening while supporting others to learn and grow.

Patrick’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and encouragement help participants build confidence, develop new skills, and enjoy the many benefits of spending time in nature.

As Rumi said, “Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” Patrick truly embodies this through his dedication to the garden and the people he supports.

The Physical Benefits of Gardening

Gardening is a great way to support both physical health and overall wellbeing. At Inspero, we see first-hand how spending time outdoors and working with nature can have a positive impact.

Some of the physical benefits of gardening include:

• Improving strength, flexibility, and endurance through lifting, digging, stretching, and walking
• Spending more time outdoors and increasing natural vitamin D exposure
• Encouraging healthier eating habits and a greater interest in fresh produce and nutritious meals

Sometimes the simplest activities can have the biggest impact.

Join Inspero’s Forest School Outdoor Cooking Class on Saturday 13th June from 11am–2pm for a fun, hands-on outdoor experience that encourages children to connect with nature, learn sustainable cooking skills, and explore healthy eating using fresh local ingredients.

The session supports confidence building, teamwork, and outdoor learning in a safe and engaging environment.

At this month’s Cooking Club, we gave each student a toothbrush set — and the tongue cleaners were definitely the biggest talking point! 😀

The children were so excited to learn about them, although we did explain that you can also clean your tongue using your toothbrush. It sparked lots of interest and some great conversations around oral health and self-care.

Toothbrush sets are also available through our food bank to help support families with essential everyday items.

Good oral hygiene doesn’t just protect your smile — it can also help reduce the risk of serious health conditions.

As part of our partnership with Hampshire County Council, Inspero is proud to provide free toothbrush and dental care sets to support adults in building healthy habits, improving confidence, and protecting their teeth and gums for the future.

You can collect your free toothbrush set from the food bank while stocks last.

Here are 5 simple tips for better oral health:

✔️ Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
✔️ Clean between your teeth daily
✔️ Look after your gums
✔️ Cut down on sugary and fizzy drinks
✔️ Visit your dentist regularly
