Chivenor Air Cadets

Chivenor Air Cadets We provide aviation experience, adventurous activities and personal development opportunities to young people in the North Devon area.

We provide training and experience to male and female cadets aged between 12 and 20 in the North Devon area in a variety of activities, all with a military and/or civilian theme. All of our activities are voluntary, and there is no requirement to go into the Armed Forces if you join, (although many do). If you are looking to join the Forces, being an air cadet can give you an advantage over other

candidates). Membership costs just £8.25 per month (£99 per year) and covers the majority of the activities we provide. Activities, for which we pay, are considerably cheaper in comparison to the independent rate. For example, a week long camp with travel, accommodation, catering and activities normally costs around £70. This includes a wide number of opportunities you cannot get elsewhere.

On Monday the 8th June, our cadets spent the evening out on the airfield developing valuable fieldcraft skills.

Throughout the session, cadets learned and practiced a range of hand signals used for communication in the field. They also gained hands-on experience constructing bashas, exploring different methods of setting them up, as well as learning useful techniques to make them more effective and secure.

The evening provided a great opportunity for cadets to build their teamwork, communication and practical outdoor skills while learning what to look out for when operating in the field.

Well done to all the cadets who took part and got stuck into the activities

On the 19th of April, our Cadets (alongside some from Barnstaple Squadron) undertook a first aid refresher involving both theory and practical sessions. This informative day covered the recovery position, DR ABC, bandaging, shock, and many other essential skills. This fundamental knowledge will help ensure the cadets are prepared for situations that others may feel uncomfortable dealing with. As a result of this enlightening day, the cadets are now able to practise first aid with confidence.
Furthermore, on the same day, the Chivenor Greenpower team were practising in the lovely weather. They raced on the airfield in our squadron’s Greenpower cars and practised quick pit stops for the upcoming event at Chivenor on 3rd May. We are very fortunate to have access to this space, and hopefully it will lead to great results this year!

On the 16th of April, five cadets from the squadron had a thrilling day flying at RAF St Mawgan near Newquay in Cornwall. Although cloudy, each cadet managed to get in the air for 25 minutes and even tried exciting aerobatics. This was a special day for new and more experienced flyers who should treasure this opportunity. Furthermore, they were lucky enough to see a Spitfire taking off to continue its journey across the country celebrating 90 years of the Spitfire.

Last weekend a group of our cadets went to Okehampton Training Camp for a wing training weekend. Our cadets spent both Saturday and Sunday learning the subjects and doing assessments on it. Well done to two of our cadets in particular, Cdt Buckley who achieved his YFA badge(Youth First Aid) and Sgt Fry who achieved his ILC badge(Initial Leadership Course).

Cdt Buckley attended the Bronze First Aid course and came out fully qualified with the badge and some new First Aid skills to show of to the Squadron.

Sgt Fry attended the Silver Leadership course and not only passed bronze leadership but silver as well that weekend.

Well done to all of our cadets who attended and we hope to see you apply your new skills at squadron for future activities and events. We are proud of you all.

Well done to the four cadets who went to west Buckland CCF this weekend, to do their Blue Radio and EFA.
Three of our cadets managed to pass blue radio and due to them already passing EFA they did their Weapons handling tests instead, which they also passed.
Thank you very much to 1146 Barnstaple Sqn
https://www.facebook.com/1146BarnstapleATC
for running the day and thank you to Sgt Fry for instructing the blue radio course and helping to assess it as well.

Monday 1st September the Squadron was invited to look at the kit involved in a large 'disaster' exercise taking place on the Airfield at RMB Chivenor, it simulated a RAF C17 transport aircraft carrying Uranium that had crashed onto the runway and hit a small aircraft. This is used for training Civilian and MOD emergency services in dealing with major incidents. Over 70 people were used as Casualties during the 4 day exercise. These events are only done 3 times a year around the country and cover Air, rail and road incidents and is rare an outside organisation gets to see what happens. We were not allowed to take many pictures due to the sensitive materials used during the 4 days.

Well done to our cadets who helped collecting the ducks from the river during the Braunton Duck Races yesterday. Helping in the local community is a key part of our cadets' training and yesterday they were efficient and professional at their task, ensuring the races could run at their allocated time.
