“There are parties and activities that I don’t really know about or get invited to.” Amy tells us.

The Christmas period is a time for fun, family, friendship and making special memories.

But for children and adults who are blind, partially sighted, Deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind, joining in the fun is sometimes impossible, making them feel left out.

Amy knows this feeling all too well
Amy has CHARGE syndrome, which means she lives with vision and hearing impairments and her balance is affected, which can make everyday activities more difficult. Amy says that sometimes children stare at her eyes or her long cane, or leave her out because she is different.

Safeguarding Adults Week 2026 is coming!

This year's theme, Every Voice, highlights the importance of being involved in decisions about your own safety and wellbeing.

Join a range of free online seminars from 16th to 20th November, covering topics including financial abuse, cybercrime, Lasting Power of Attorney, informed decision-making and supporting victims of abuse.

Happy Halloween trick or treaters…Let’s make the spooky season inclusive and accessible for all.

Here are our 3 top tips when trick or treating, to aid people who are Deaf or with sensory impairment!

1. Knock once and wait. Someone might not hear you or may need longer to reach the door.
2. Wave and face the person with face uncovered. This can aid communication for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
3. Say hello as some people might not know you’re there. Don’t sneak up on someone with sight loss!

Happy Halloween! It may be the spooky season, but there’s nothing scary about getting support from our Benefits Team.

Do you recognise the voice guiding us on our journey?

We’ve been putting the Gen 2 Meta smart glasses to the test, exploring how they can help people with vision impairment travel more confidently and independently.

From reading bus timetables to identifying approaching buses, this technology can help remove some of the uncertainty that many people with a vision impairment face when travelling. After all, getting on the wrong bus and heading in the wrong direction can be a stressful and frightening experience.

That’s why we’re especially proud that the voice providing this support is that of our Patron, Dame Judi Dench.

Technology like smart glasses is opening up new possibilities for greater independence, confidence and connection for people with vision and hearing impairments.
