Today we harvested what may be the final picking from our first crop of spinach.

Sown by our volunteers on the 20th of April, as a companion plant to our peas, this humble one-metre strip has produced an impressive 1.2kg of spinach!

Along the way, it's been enjoyed in lunchtime salads, served as part of our Volunteer Celebration feast last week, and of course, nibbled fresh straight from the garden as people wandered past πŸ˜‹

Today, the final harvest has been frozen, and will soon find its way into a delicious meal prepared by our lovely kitchen team.

Over 1kg of spinach from just one metre of bed isn't bad going! We often think we need lots of space to grow food, but this little patch has shown just how much you can harvest from a very small area, and we're here for that 🀩

Doing the daily morning garden inspection and what a lovely sight to be greeted by! πŸ₯”πŸŒΌ

Our potato patch is looking gorgeous, with lots of bright calendula flowers blooming amongst the green foliage. Calendula makes a fab companion plant, helping to attract pollinators and beneficial insects such as hoverflies and ladybirds, which can help keep common garden pests away - yay πŸ’ͺ

We also spotted a little lilac potato flower peeking through, which we're happy to see πŸ’œ Potato plants often flower when they're busy producing tubers underground, so it's always an exciting sign that things are growing away nicely!

🌱 Let’s Grow Something Great Together, ππžπ°π›π’π π π’π§! 🌱

We're excited to be organising local planting and gardening sessions to help brighten our shared spaces and make ππžπ°π›π’π π π’π§ an even more enjoyable place for everyone.

Our aim is simple: to create a greener, more colourful neighbourhood, support biodiversity, and increase local food production. 🌼🐝πŸ₯• T
hanks to funding from the The National Lottery Awards for All Fund, we're helping make our community more welcoming, sustainable, and vibrant.

A huge thank you to our wonderful local resident and community gardener, Angie Main, who is supporting this project and sharing her knowledge, enthusiasm, and expertise with volunteers throughout the sessions. πŸ’š

Working in partnership with Newbiggin Town Council and Northumberland County Council, we're adopting a number of planting spaces across the town. Our first locations include:

πŸ“ Windsor Terrace (behind The Ship)
πŸ“ Gibson Street

No gardening experience is needed, and you don't need to bring any tools or supplies – just yourself and enthusiasm. Angie and the team will be there to support you every step of the way.

⏰ Whether you can spare 30 minutes or a couple of hours, every bit of help makes a difference.
