Appleby Archaeology Group is a non-profit making voluntary organisation, with members throughout the Eden Valley. We meet regularly in Appleby to learn about new archaeological discoveries and historical research. We are also conducting our own original research into the history and archaeology of Brackenber Moor, near Appleby-in-Westmorland.

Radiocarbon dating has confirmed the presence of an Iron Age farmstead outside Appleby-in-Westmorland. Appleby Archaeology Group investigated the site last year and we have now dated the ditches of two pre-Roman roundhouses. The evidence demonstrates farming at the site for over 2000 years!

Our 2026 AGM is on Thursday 8th January starting 7.00pm. From 7.30pm there will be three talks by members of the Group about last year’s excavations at Castrigg, Carlisle and Orkney. Non-members are welcome (£5 donation). The event is held in the Supper Room upstairs in Appleby Market Hall.
