EQUINE INFLUENZA
- IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE BRITISH EQUESTRIAN FEDERATION

It is now apparent that the current equine influenza outbreaks in the Uk are occurring more quickly and are wider spread than in 2019 and if the trend continues there will be a huge impact on this summer’s equestrian activities.

Imports , sales and non vaccinated or lapsed vaccinated animals , particularly non TBs, natives and animals at the upcoming Appleby horse fair are of the greatest concern.

Any equine which is likely to mix with others, should, on welfare grounds , be vaccinated within the last 6 months , or don’t mix with others.

British Equestrian have issued the guidelines below:

How lovely to see Lady Louise continuing the tradition of driving our wonderful ponies ...

Circa May 16, 2026, Lady Louise Windsor turned heads at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, steering a carriage with the quiet grace of her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, while wearing a neon yellow high‑vis vest. Now 22 and finishing her English Literature degree at the University of St Andrews, the daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, had been working behind the scenes for days in a paid role as a chief organizer. A day earlier, she had lightheartedly directed her parents from behind a metal barrier, swapping her vest for a fleece gilet labeled “CAI Official.” But the real moment came when she climbed into the driver’s seat for the Meet of the British Driving Society, guiding 50 horses and ponies around the park. Prince Philip first taught her the sport when she was just ten; after he passed, he left her his cherished green carriage, equipment, and Fell ponies Balmoral Nevis and Notlaw Storm. Now she competes in his memory, all while her mother, the Duchess, serves as vice president of the event her family adores. The horse show was deeply personal to Queen Elizabeth, who attended almost every year from its founding in 1943 until her death. Lady Louise, often whispered to be the late Queen’s favorite grandchild, wore a horse‑shaped pendant at her grandmother’s vigil and has long been compared to a young Elizabeth. Nick Brooks‑Ward, the event’s director, praised her lack of “airs or graces,” noting she earns “a proper paid job” without royal special treatment. With rumors of a possible military career and a supportive boyfriend from St Andrews cheering from the sidelines, Lady Louise is quietly becoming the family’s quietest, most genuine star, honoring both grandparents with every turn of the wheel.

A fresh Did You Know for this week:
https://www.fellponysociety.org.uk/health.htm
On the Health page you can find advice about looking after the health of your Fell pony. If you're an FPS Member you can also use the Grassroots online registry - the link off the Health page gives you access to animal details, member details, pedigrees and progeny lists, and ponies marked as for sale or available for AI. It is free to Fell Pony Society members and has been available since Spring 2009.

The link to Grassroots is https://breeds.grassroots.co.uk/FELL
To log in use your FPS membership access number (it is the 5-digit number printed on your Magazine envelope address label; it is not your annual membership receipt number) plus your password.

New FPS members will receive a link via email to set a Grassroots password when they join the Society.

If as a current member you have forgotten your password, then you need to go to the Grassroots Log In screen and “click to Reset Password”. Grassroots will send you an email to the address that FPS have on record for you. You use the link in that email to reset your password. If you can't receive the link because you have changed your email address please let the FPS office know your new address to update Grassroots.

A breed analysis feature called Check Mate is also available - very much a Spring topic of interest. Check Mate allows members to analyse potential breeding decisions: you can select any entire male from the database and match him to any of your own females or those flagged as for sale. It creates a simple four generation "What If" pedigree with any common ancestors highlighted in colour.
